Mangaluru, Jul 23: In a rare incident, a class 8 student of Government Model Upper Primary School at Haradi, a remote village in Puttur taluk of Dakshina Kannada has prevented the transfer of four of his teachers by contacting the state home minister over phone!

13-year-old Divith Rai had sent an SMS to Karnataka home minister G Parameshwara earlier this week saying he wanted to talk to him for five minutes. “I am the home minister of my school council. I want to talk to you for five minutes sir,” read the SMS.

Mr Rai's uncle had given him the idea of contacting the home minister directly after BEO refused the demand of the school development and monitoring committee (SDMC) to cancel the transfer of the teachers.

The members of the SDMC, parents and students had earlier laid siege to the office of the block education officer in Puttur, but in vain.

However, within a few minutes after Mr Rai sent a message to Mr Parameshwara, the latter gave him a call and listened patiently for five minutes. The home minister also assured him that he would forward his request to Tanveer Sait, minister for primary and secondary education.

Mr Sait told media persons in Bengaluru that Mr Parameshwar informed him about the boy's call.

“I appreciate the boy's concern and timely action of drawing the home minister's attention. We don't want to inconvenience students; we have decided to let the four teachers continue in the same school which has 432 students," he said, adding that adding that the transfers had been effected on the basis of the students' attendance.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.
