Mysuru, Aug 21, Nearly two weeks after?Saligrama police in Mysuru district arrested a 10-member gang of antique peddlers and recovered a 400-year-old Qur’an written on gold coated pages from them, it has emerged that the scripture could be the same copy of Qur’an that was stolen from a museum in Jammu and?Kashmir 12 years ago.

IGP (Southern range)?B?K?Singh said, sleuths attached to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), who are already investigating into the case, have collected information in this regard from his office.

On the other hand, officials of the Department of Heritage and Archeology from the valley have contacted the police here.

Upon their request, photos and video of the scripture have been dispatched to them and the response is awaited. Besides, a historian from New Delhi also came down to Mysuru to vet into the prized possession.

When the Qur’an was found missing from Prathap Singh?Museum in Srinagar in 2003, it had stirred a hornet’s nest, as it was one of the rarest scriptures.

No sooner the news over the possibilities of theft spread, the locals had taken to streets and had forced the government to order for a CBI?probe.

However, the Qur’an remains to be traced and it is only with the recent case in Mysuru, the investigators have been verifying into the similarities if any.

Former vice-chancellor of Mangalore and Goa universities B?Sheik Ali, who helped the police in establishing the significance of the Qur’an after its seizure, said it could be the calligraphy of Aurangzeb, the crown prince during the period of rule of Shahjahan during 1640 AD.

Meanwhile, a team of investigators from Mysuru, who had left for Hyderabad, following an information given by the accused in the case, have returned empty-handed.

The accused, during interrogation, had revealed that it was sourced from Hyderabad.

With different opinions emerging from various quarters, the police authorities have decided to write to the Department of Archaeology, Heritage and Museum. During the preliminary investigation, it had emerged that the religious scripture may belong to the period of Akbar.

However, historians have a different version, adducing at the period of rule of Aurangzeb and?Shahjahan.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Educational institutions in Mangaluru that rely on the popular Mangala Stadium for their annual sports events are bracing for an inconvenience as the city's key sporting venue is set to close its gates for a significant upgrade. The stadium is expected to be unavailable for approximately two months starting from January 15, 2026.

The closure is necessitated by a proposed overhaul of the stadium's facilities, with a special focus on upgrading the synthetic track. Pradeep Dsouza, Assistant Director of the District of Youth Empowerment and Sports (DYES), Dakshina Kannada, confirmed the development.

"Experts have visited the stadium, conducted a thorough inspection, and have given the go-ahead for a complete makeover," Dsouza stated. "Funds have been allocated for the project, and we are currently awaiting the final green signal from state officials to commence the work. We anticipate that the work will likely begin in the second week of January. Consequently, we have stopped renting out the stadium to colleges and other organizations in preparation for the upgrade."

The timing presents a logistical challenge for colleges, as many schools have already concluded their sports meets.

"Colleges will now be organizing their events and will need to find alternative locations to host their sports meets," Dsouza added. He suggested a few potential venues, including the Dakshina Kannada police ground, University College grounds, Panambur grounds, Swaraj Maidan in Moodbidri, and the Mangalore University sports grounds in Konaje.

However, many institutions note that finding a comparable venue will be difficult. While the DK police ground and University College grounds are closer to the city center, they do not possess the extensive facilities and infrastructure offered by Mangala Stadium.

Dr. P Dayananda Pai - P Satisha Govt First Grade College, Carstreet, is one such institution dependent on the stadium. Principal Jayakar Bhandary expressed hope for a swift completion of the work. "We expect the work to be completed at the earliest. If not, we will be forced to look for other venues to host the sports day for our students," Bhandary said, highlighting the pressing need for the city's main sporting facility.

Mangaluru: Public transport in Mangaluru is set for a state-led transformation as the government moves to deploy 100 new electric govt buses to replace unreliable private services. The initiative aims to provide a dependable alternative to private operators who have been frequently "cutting trips," leaving thousands of commuters stranded.

The announcement was made by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV during a public phone-in session. The move specifically targets routes where private bus service has become erratic, ensuring that citizens no longer have to rely on a fluctuating private sector for their daily commute.

Restoring the Govt Presence

The transport crisis was brought to the forefront by Ramayya, a resident of Bajal, who highlighted a growing trend of private buses skipping morning and night trips. With the previous KSRTC (govt) services discontinued, residents have been left without a fallback option.

To fix this, the DC confirmed that the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme will bring 100 government-owned electric buses to the city:

•    Phased Deployment: The first 50 of the new 100 government buses are scheduled to arrive by March 2026.

•    State Infrastructure: Two new government depots, including one at Mudipu, are being prepared for operations.

•    Recruitment: The state has already begun training a new batch of government bus drivers to ensure the fleet is operational the moment it arrives.
