Shivamogga, Nov 6: Former chief minister B S Yeddyurappa’s son B Y Raghavendra is the only BJP candidate to win in the five constituencies of Karnataka where by-elections were held on November 3.

Shivamogga has been a stronghold of the BJP since Yeddyurappa’s entry to state politics. This time it was clash between sons of two former chief ministers in this Lok Sabha seat. For BJP candidate it was not a cake walk as JD(S) candidate Madhu Bangarappa. Raghavendra secured 4,89,959 votes and won by a margin of 47,388 votes against Madhu Bangarappa.

The November 3 bypolls in Shivamogga was necessitated as its MP B S Yeddyurappa had to resign after becoming an MLA earlier this year.

The constituency is dominated by members of the Lingayat community, to which Raghavendra belongs. The district also comprises a large segment of Edigas, followed by Dalits, Brahmins, Muslims, Vokkaligas and OBCs. Besides, there is also a sizable population of the Jains, Rajputs, Christians and also Tamil-speaking people.

In 2014, when Yeddyurappa returned to the BJP, he resigned as the MLA of Shikaripura to contest the Lok Sabha polls. Raghavendra contested the bye-poll in Shikaripura and won by a large margin. In 2009, Raghavendra had defeated Madhu’s father former CM S Bangarappa.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.
