Rahul Gandhi to contest 2019 polls from Karnataka?

Bengaluru, Jan 4: Eyeing big time support for Congress from people of backward Hyderabad-Karnataka, after the party-led UPA government successfully moved the amendment to Article 371(J) to empower the people this region with special status and larger inflows of l funds, AICC President Rahul Gandhi is likely to contest from Karnataka in 2019 General Elections.

According to highly placed party sources a party delegation from the Bidar District Congress have plans to meet the Mr Gandhi and appeal him to contest from the Bidar seat, which has elected large number of Congress MLAs in the 2018 Assembly elections.

Congress had won five Assembly segments out of eight in this Lok Sabha seat, with BJP 2 and JD(S) winning the remaining.

In the recent cabinet reshuffle, the number of MLAs getting cabinet berths in this northernmost district of Karnataka has risen to three, while two other MLAs are nominated to two state-owned Boards with minister of state ranks.

“The prominence given to Bidar district, in the cabinet formation and the nominations to the Boards and Corporations would indicate the possibilities of the Congress to field Rahul Gandhi as its candidate for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections” a Congress leader from Bidar said.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.
