Rahul insulted India, justified terrorism: BJP

Aug 23: The BJP today accused Rahul Gandhi of belittling and insulting India in his address at an event in Germany, alleging that the Congress president tried to justify terrorism and "lied through his teeth" to attack the Narendra Modi government.

BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra sought the Congress chief's apology on his comments on a range of issues, claiming that he presented India in a bad light by allegedly blaming the country's culture for violence against women.

Addressing a gathering at the Bucerius Summer School in Hamburg yesterday, Gandhi had cited the example of the Islamic State (IS) to say the exclusion of a large number of people from the development process could lead to the creation of terrorist groups in the world.

He had then accused the BJP government of excluding the tribals, Dalits and minorities from the development narrative, adding that "this could be a dangerous thing".

Hitting back at the Congress chief, Patra told reporters, "Rahul Gandhi left no opportunity to belittle India and present it in a bad light. His speech was full of lies and deception and its sole aim was to insult India...He should apologise."

Taking a dig at Gandhi, he said, "Rahul Gandhi has behaved like Rahul Gandhi and expecting any maturity from him is a futile exercise."

Gandhi tried to justify terrorism and a terror outfit like the IS, Patra said, adding, "There cannot be anything more frightening and worrying."

Gandhi said the minorities in India would "sell their soul" to the IS if jobs were not available for them, the BJP spokesperson said, adding that this amounted to "denigrating" the community.

The Congress chief had a poor opinion of India, he said, adding that Gandhi talked about China, even though India had become "one of the leading countries in the world" under the Modi government.

Patra wondered whether the figures Gandhi cited regarding China producing 50 jobs every 24 hours compared to India's 44, were "manufactured in 10 Janpath".

The Congress chief's mother, Sonia Gandhi, stays at 10, Janpath Road in the national capital.

"You have no data and you do no preparation," Patra said of Gandhi.

He alleged that Sonia Gandhi, who was the Congress chief for over 19 years, ruled India as a "proxy prime minister" for 10 years.

"Wasn't this the Indian culture which helped her reach the top? Rahul and Sonia Gandhi should come out and explain as to how they can point fingers at this great Indian culture," the BJP spokesperson said, seeking the Congress chief's apology for his response on the issue of women's safety in India.

Gandhi "lied through his teeth" in accusing the Modi government of striking down a law on atrocities against Dalits and tribals, Patra said, adding that Parliament had in fact made the legislation more stringent by passing an amendment in the recently-concluded Monsoon Session.

Under the Congress-led UPA government, the Right to Food law was implemented in only 11 states, while the BJP-led NDA dispensation had enforced it in all the 29 states and seven Union territories of the country, he said.

The rural employment scheme (MGNREGA) became a "monumental success" under the current government from a "monument to failure" it was under the UPA, Patra claimed, adding that women accounted for over 56 per cent of its workforce now -- the highest ever.

The beneficiaries of over 431 government schemes were getting money, amounting to over Rs 4 lakh crore, credited directly to their bank accounts, resulting in the saving of Rs 90 crore, which used to be "pocketed" by Congress leaders earlier, he alleged.

Patra also referred to the words of praise from international bodies for the reform measures undertaken by the Modi government to rebut Gandhi's charges.

Udupi: Udupi became the second city on the Karnataka coast after Mangaluru to launch water rationing, a senior official said on Tuesday.

Commissioner of the Udupi City Municipal Corporation Rayappa said that the rationing system will come into force from Wednesday and will continue till the water in the reservoir reaches comfortable levels.

The dam built across the Swarna river at a place called Baje, which is the only source of water for Udupi city, recorded 3.25 meters of water as against the top level of 6.30 meters.

The decision of water rationing will be reviewed periodically until the reservoir regains its fullest levels, the official said.

The Mangaluru City Corporation resorted to water rationing on Saturday following declining water levels in the reservoir built across the Nethravati river at Thumbe.

Mangaluru: Disgruntled BJP leader and former MLA K Raghupathi Bhat, who is contesting the legislative council election as an independent candidate from the South West Graduates constituency, said the BJP has adopted the “godfather culture” of the Congress.

Bhat told reporters here on Saturday, that he has not tried to appease any senior BJP leaders to get a party ticket to contest the MLC poll.

“I am contesting and seeking votes based on my achievements. My contesting may have a negative impact on the BJP. However, I want to go back to the BJP after winning this election,” Bhat said, and refused to answer the actual reason for the denial of a BJP ticket to him.

“I have no idea who played from behind that I was denied a ticket for the MLC poll.

Earlier, the BJP had a culture of selecting candidates for MLA and MLC polls by seeking the opinion of party workers at the booth level, followed by discussions at mandal and district levels.

Now the situation is such that even if one person’s name was sent from the state, the final list will be different. The godfather culture of the Congress has stretched into our party too. Only those who appease leaders get a ticket in the BJP. However, I have not appeased any leader. I believe in the support of party workers, and with this confidence I am contesting the election,” Bhat said.

To a query, Bhat said that he has not contacted by BJP leaders after deciding to contest the MLC poll.

“I have already requested all leaders that I should get the party’s Form B to contest the MLC poll from the South West Graduates constituency. I have told them that I am also contesting as an independent candidate on behalf of the BJP. The ultimate aim of my contesting the election is that senior leaders should know the injustice that honest party workers are facing in the BJP,” he said.

Nearly 80 Air India Express flights were canceled after the cabin crew members went on a "mass sick leave", official sources said on Wednesday.

As many as 79 international and domestic flights were canceled after about 300 senior cabin crew members reported sick at the last minute and switched off their mobile phones.

The Air India Express management is currently trying to reach out to the crew, who are protesting against the new employment term at the Tata Group-owned airline, sources said.

The cabin crew has also alleged that there was a lack of equality in the treatment of the staff after the merger with Tata Group. They claim that some staff members were offered lower job position despite clearing interviews, sources said.

"A section of our cabin crew has reported sick at the last minute, starting last night, resulting in flight delays and cancellations. While we are engaging with the crew to understand the reasons behind these occurrences, our teams are actively addressing this issue to minimise any inconvenience caused to our guests as a result," an Air India Express spokesperson said.

"We sincerely apologise to our guests for this unexpected disruption and emphasise that this situation does not reflect the standard of service we strive to provide," the spokesperson added.

Guests impacted by cancellations will be offered a full refund or complimentary rescheduling to another date, the airline said.

Several passengers took to their social media accounts and complained about the sudden cancellations of their flights. They said that they had "no information" about the cancellations.

Some "very disappointed" passengers on X said that they had reached the airport when they were informed that their flights were canceled.

"We apologise for any inconvenience. Please be informed that your flight has been canceled due to operational reasons," Air India Express said in response to one of the posts on X.
