Mangalore, Apr 3: Maintaining that the Congress party was committed to taking criminal offences such as assaults on women seriously, Dakshina Kannada district in-charge minister B Ramanath Rai said that the accused in connection with assaulting a Congress corporator at Kodikere in Suratkal limits would be arrested, and suitable action would be taken against them.

Addressing mediapersons at a press conference here on Thursday, he said that the accused ought to be arrested for assaulting a woman who had been to the area for canvassing for the party in the coming elections. No one is above the law, he said, also maintaining that the accused in previous cases of moral policing in the district had been arrested and put behind bars.

Referring to the minor clash between two political groups that took place in Nehru Maidan following a panel discussion of representatives from political parties, Mr Rai said that few vested interests were creating negative publicity in this regard and people would reply to this on the Election Day.

Replying to the challenge given by BJP national leader Ananthkumar that Rai should apologise to the people of the district for making false statements about the sitting MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, Mr Rai said that he or the Congress party did not need certification from others. No one can question my honesty and sincerity, he said.

When a reporter asked his take on the allegation made by BJP that Rai had slept during every session in the state assembly, the minister replied that although he might have slept a few times, he had never watched blue films during the assembly proceedings, in reference to two BJP MLAs who were caught watching porn clippings during assembly a couple of years ago.

On the occasion, Mangalore North MLA Moidin Bava alleged that former minister Krishna J Palemar had been involved in making false allegations on him and the Congress party, while he himself had publicly given a clean chit to the three accused who had assaulted the female corporator on a television news channel.

Mangaluru: In a decisive move to tackle the city’s deteriorating sanitation infrastructure, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has announced a massive ₹1,200 crore action plan to overhaul its underground drainage (UGD) network.

The initiative, spearheaded by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV, aims to bridge "missing links" in the current system that have left residents grappling with overflowing sewage and environmental hazards.

The Breaking Point

The announcement follows a high-intensity phone-in session on Thursday, where the DC was flooded with grievances from frustrated citizens. Residents, including Savithri from Yekkur, described a harrowing reality: raw sewage from apartments leaking into stormwater drains, creating a "permanent stink" and turning residential zones into mosquito breeding grounds.

"We are facing immense difficulties due to the stench and the health risks. Local officials have remained silent until now," one resident reported during the session.

The Strategy: A Six-Year Vision

DC Darshan HV confirmed that the proposed plan is not a temporary patch but a comprehensive six-year roadmap designed to accommodate Mangaluru’s projected population growth. Key highlights of the plan include:

•    Infrastructure Expansion: Laying additional pipelines to connect older neighborhoods to the main grid.

•    STP Crackdown: Stricter enforcement of Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) regulations. While new apartments are required to have functional STPs, many older buildings lack them entirely, and several newer units are reportedly non-functional.

•    Budgetary Push: The plan has already been discussed with the district in-charge minister and the Secretary of the Urban Development Department. It is slated for formal presentation in the upcoming state budget.
