Mangaluru, Jan 19: Dakshina Kannada district in-charge minister B Ramanath Rai called on citizens to maintain peace and communal harmony in the district, without paying attention to rumours attempting to spark tension among communities.

Addressing a press conference here on Monday, he stressed that programmes or conventions should not be held with communalism as their agenda since the district was communally-sensitive. The communal unrest that was caused by untoward incidents in few parts of the district was brought under control by swift police intervention. Although the police department has taken all necessary measures to maintain law and order in most places, people and local residents in the district should cooperate and help in preserving harmony among communities, he said, urging people of Dakshina Kannada to uphold peace in the society.
Mr Rai told media persons that condemning acts of communal rioting instigated by provocative speeches was a must. “Necessary action will be taken by the police department against the culprits who engage in communal rioting. We should contemplate how the riots began and how they were instigated. Since innocent people are more affected by communal clashes, contemplation in this regard is essential, along with the need to maintain harmonious relations,” he said, calling on people not to heed rumours made by anti-social elements in the society.
He also said that much responsibility fell on the majority community to protect the communal harmony in a particular place, warning people against conducting events with communalism as their agenda in the future.
The minister assured that the Shiradi Ghat road construction works would be completed within the specified time of six months.
