Rain continues to play havoc, two die in Kasargod

Kasargod, Jul 14: Two persons lost their lives in monsoon-related calamities in Kasargod district that received the heaviest rain of the season. The season saw huge deficit in rainfall since the onset of monsoon in June.

Chirakara Narayanan Nair, 68, a farmer at Kuvatty in Karindalam village near Neeleshwaram, died on the spot as a coconut tree got uprooted under the impact of incessant rain and fell over him while he was standing near a culvert in his compound around 10 a.m. on Sunday, sources here said.

In the other tragedy, Seenappa Shetty, 82, died as cashew tree fell over him owing to strong wind as he was returning from a nearby shop at Seethangoli near Badiadkka late on evening, official sources here said.

The unrelenting rain that lashed the district saw a sudden spurt in water levels in most rivers as low-lying areas, including Seethangoli, Hidaath, Madhur, Shiriya, Patla, and Mogral-Puthur got inundated, disrupting normal life. The gushing waters from the nearby Madhuvahini river entered the famed Madhur Madanandeshwara Siddhi Vinayaka temple near Kasaragod and devotees had to wade through the water as the temple premises got flooded.

Train services got disrupted for hours after a huge tree fell over a track at Chithari locality near Kanhangad on Saturday evening. The trains that got stranded at various places included Gandhidham-Nagercoil Express, Thiruvananthapuram-bound Maveli Express, and Mangalore-Kannur passenger. The train services could be restored by around 7.30 p.m.

Udupi, Dec 15: What was meant to be a post-pilgrimage gathering turned tragic in Padukere village of Brahmavar taluk, Udupi district, late Sunday night, when a clash among youths escalated into a fatal assault, leaving one man dead.

The victim has been identified as 30-year-old Santosh Mogaveera, a resident of Padukere.

According to preliminary information, the incident took place during a late-night drinking party involving a group of local youths who had recently returned after completing their pilgrimage to the Sabarimala shrine. An argument reportedly broke out among the group and soon escalated into a violent confrontation.

During the ensuing brawl, Santosh Mogaveera was allegedly assaulted and collapsed at the spot after sustaining serious injuries. He was rushed by local residents to a private hospital in Brahmavar, where doctors declared him dead.

On receiving information, senior police officials, including Brahmavar Circle Inspector Gopikrishna, Kota Police Sub-Inspector Praveen Kumar T, Station ASI Manthesh Jabagoudar, and head constables Pradeep and Ashok, visited the spot and conducted an inspection.

Police have taken four youths into custody in connection with the incident. A case has been registered at the Kota police station, and further investigation is underway to ascertain the exact sequence of events leading to the death.
