The Kerala State Transport Project (KSTP) is widening the 28-km Kasaragod-Kanhangad State Highway in the area.
As the landslip occurred early Wednesday, scores of labourers engaged in building concrete walls on either side of the road had a narrow escape. Cracks developed near the spots where the road works were on.
People in the area expressed concern over the stability of their houses.
The first phase of road widening from Kasaragod to Palakkunnu has disrupted smooth flow of traffic along the stretch, especially after the rains picked up.
Several Kerala State Road Transport Corporation buses are running on alternative routes. Some have even cancelled trips.
