Rains lash parts of Karnataka; lightning strikes claim four lives

Mysuru, Apr 5: Four people were killed and one person sustained injures in separate incidents when lightning struck them in Hassan, Mandya and Mysuru districts on Tuesday. Three cows also died due to lightning.

Parts of Hassan, Mysuru, Chamarajanagar and Mandya districts received heavy rain on Tuesday evening. Murali (35) and Vijaykumar of Basavanahalli, Arkalgud taluk, Hassan district were killed when lightning struck them. Krishnaraj Urs (35) of Rajanabelaguli, Periyapatna taluk, Mysuru district was killed due to lightning when he was working in the field. He took shelter from the showers under a tree around 4.30 pm when the lightning struck him, killing him on the spot. Another person Eshwarappa, who sustained burns, has been admitted to KR?Hospital in Mysuru for treatment.

Sujatha Ramesh (45) was killed at Rudrakshipura, Maddur taluk, Mandya district. It is said she was taking the cattle to a shelter when the lightning struck her.

Hassan city and surrounding areas received heavy rain for more than half an hour. Rainwater entered a few houses at Beeranahalli Layout in the city. There was traffic disruption on Belagodu-Sakaleshpur Road as a huge tree got uprooted and fell on electricity poles at Lakkunda.

Houses damaged

More than 30 houses were damaged as the roofs of the houses were blown away due to heavy winds at Basavanahalli Koppal in Ramanathapura hobli, Hassan district. Gundlupet taluk and parts of Bandipur forests in Chamarajanagar district too received rain on Tuesday.

Heavy showers lashed different parts of Kodagu district on Tuesday. Kushalnagar and Siddapura received rain coupled with lightning for more than half an hour. The sky remained overcast throughout the day in Madikeri and Virajpet.

Mudigere taluk, Chikkamagaluru district, received heavy rainfall for more than one hour. The rain affected tender mangoes grown on trees in the region. Following the rain, electricity supply was disrupted. The showers brought cheer to coffee planters and farmers.

Melkar, Dec 17: The 17th Annual Day and Graduation Ceremony of Melkar Women’s PU and Degree College, themed “Fusion-2K25,” was celebrated with dignity and enthusiasm, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s academic journey. The programme reflected the college’s steadfast commitment to academic excellence, character building, and the holistic development of students.

The event was inaugurated by Mr. Asif Mohammed, whose presence greatly enriched the occasion. The celebration was further graced by the chief guests Mr. P. B. Ahmed Mudassir and Mr. Nissar Fakeer Mohammed, along with the distinguished guests of honour Mr. B. A. Nazeer and Mr. Ibrahim Gadiyar. In their inspiring addresses, the guests encouraged the graduating students and appreciated the dedicated efforts of the management, faculty, and students.

The annual report was presented by the Principal, Mr. Abdul Majeed S, highlighting the institution’s academic progress, notable achievements, and extracurricular accomplishments during the academic year.

The presidential address was delivered by the esteemed Chairman of Melkar Women’s PU and Degree College, Dr. Haji S. M. Rasheed, who emphasized the vital role of education in empowering women and shaping responsible citizens. He also stressed the importance of discipline, dedication, and perseverance in achieving success.

Cultural programmes and academic recognitions formed an integral part of the celebration, showcasing the talents and achievements of the students. The graduation ceremony was a proud moment for the outgoing students as they were formally conferred degrees and wished success in their future endeavours.

Ms. Mashmooma Fathima served as the Master of Ceremonies. The welcome address was delivered by Ms. Fathima Nida, and the programme concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Ms. Ayisha Suhana.

The event successfully achieved its objectives and was highly appreciated by the guests and attendees.
