Mangaluru, Sep 8: After a gap of few days, the coastal districts of Karnataka received moderate rains on Monday evening and Tuesday morning. The sky remained overcast along with mild showers.
A youth was killed when lightning struck him here at Palubettu in Anjaru village in Hiriyadka in Udupi district. According to the police, the deceased has been identified as Sandeep Poojary (26).
The Uttara Kannada district received scattered and moderate rains on Monday. Sky was overcast in some areas.
Other parts of Karnataka
Several districts of North Karnataka received heavy rains on Monday bringing huge relief for farmers. Deficit rains has led to drought in the State with the government declaring as many as 135 taluks as drought-hit.
Rains pounded Dharwad, Belagavi, Dharwad, Vijayaura and Ballari districts since Sunday night. The Ballari district received widespread rain. Kurugod taluk in the district recorded the highest rainfall of 114.2 mm followed by Kudatini (104.2 mm). More than 150 houses partially collapsed across Ballari district and a baby was injured after the ceiling of a house came crashing down.
The damage was more in Kurugod with standing paddy crop on hundreds of acres being washed away. The movement of vehicles was disrupted on Kurugodu-Sirigeri and other roads as several ponds and tanks overflowed.
A sports utility vehicle was stranded on a bridge near Badanahatty and the police rescued the driver of the vehicle. Rain water washed away 40 bags of fertiliser stocked by a farmer at his house. Green chilly sown on 20 acres was washed away while power supply has been affected in Thimmanna camp near Emmiganur in Ballari district.
Forty-five-year-old Manjanna was washed away in a pond while he was attempting to cross the water body near Chinnahagari, Kudligi. The police have traced the body.
Hosapete received incessant rains for four hours in the wee hours of Monday. Water gushed into low-lying areas and residents had to take shelter in schools and government buildings. According to the sources in revenue department as many as 101 houses have partially collapsed in the taluk.
The Vijayapura district has been receiving good rains for the past three days. It rained 17.4 mm in Vijayapura, 15.6 mm in Devarahipparagi and 70.3 mm in Bagewadi.
Bagalkote has also been receiving copious rains for the past two days. Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner P?A?Megahannavar told Deccan Herald that a Central drought study team would visit the district this week.
Belagavi received good rains for nearly an hour on Monday noon, bringing mercury levels down.
Moderate to heavy rains continued to lash several parts of the Shivamogga district on Monday.
Shivamogga, Bhadravathi, Hosanagar, Thirthahalli, Sagar, Shikaripur and some parts of Sorab received good spell of rains. In the last 48 hours, Shivamogga received the highest rainfall of 32.60 mm, followed by Shikaripur-15 mm and Thirthahalli- 3 mm.
There has been a slight rise in water level of Linganamakki dam following the good spell of rains. Water level rose to 1787.15 feet against the maximum level of 1819 feet.
