Mangaluru/Puttur, Aug 20: After pounding the coastal district hard for almost a week, the monsoon rains subside in Dakshina Kannada even as mudslides disconnected some remote villages from rest of the district.

The water level in most of the rivers in Dakshina Kannada is also slowing receding. The level in the Kumaradhara in Puttur is 23.5 m; the danger level is 26.5 meters. The level in the Nethravati in Bantwal is 7.6 m. A few days ago it had crossed the danger mark of 8.5 m.

Meanwhile, the local police found the body of a 40-year-old man by the side of Kumaradhara river in Pajjadka of Alankaru village near Kadaba. The police suspect that he slipped into the river at Sakleshpur in Hassan district. Efforts are on to identify him.

On Sunday, the Kadaba police rescued five-member family that was trapped in a farmhouse located at the foothills of Puttila in Bilinele village of Puttur taluk.

The police said they rushed to the spot in the morning after reports of landslip in a part of the farmland belonging a farmer’s family. The landslip cut off the mud track connecting their house to the main road. Fearing more landslips, the police moved him and his family to the house of a relative of theirs staying on top of the hill.

According to the police, two coconut trees and 10 arecanut trees in Gunapal Gowda’s farm were swept away following the landslide. There was no harm to around 40 households staying at an elevated portion in the area, the police said.
