Mangaluru, Feb 4: In coming days, the ration card holders in three coastal districts of Karnataka – Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kananda will have the option of getting parboiled rice and raw rice from ration shops.
In the wake of the demand by some card holders, who wanted only parboiled rice, Karnataka Food Commission has decided to recommend to the government the supply of boiled rice to people in these districts
Now the government is supplying five kilograms white rice, two kilograms ragi or wheat or corn to ration card holders under public distribution system in North Karnataka and Bayaluseeme areas.
But in the coastal belt, ration card holders are given seven kilograms of white rice. There is, however, a demand for the supply of boiled rice among the ration cardholders in the district, Dr N Krishnamurthy, chairperson of the State Commission for Food and Civil Supplies.
The available boiled rice is supplied to hostels run by the government, he added. Keeping in mind the demand of the people in the district, the Commission will bring the issue of supplying boiled rice to the ration cardholders to the notice of the state government, he informed.
