Udupi, 14: Former Udupi-Chikkamagaluru MP K Jayaprakash Hegde, who is facing the wrath of a few senior Congress leaders after contesting MLC elections as an independent candidate, has made it clear that he was ready to face the expulsion from party.

Mr. Hegde said that he himself had lodged a complaint with the party high command that some senior leaders in Udupi district had not campaigned for him when he had stood for the Assembly elections from Kundapur in 2008 and then during the Lok Sabha elections from Udupi-Chikkamgaluru constituency in 2014. These senior leaders had not even worked for party in the recently-concluded gram panchayat elections.

“But no action had been taken against them. Not working for the party also constitutes anti-party activity,” he said. Besides, it would be unfair for the party to expel him as he was not contesting as a Congress candidate but as an independent.

Oscar’s warning

Mr Hegde’s bold remarks came after Rajya Sabha member Oscar Fernandes said that the party constitution enabled implementation of disciplinary measures against people who go against the dictum of the party high command.

Speaking to media persons here on Sunday, the senior Mr Fernandes said that the official candidate announced by the party is the party member and whoever goes against it is no longer considered as a party member. The district Congress committee is working on the necessary measures that would be taken and would consult State committee for the final action to be taken against the rebels.

Sorake too

Urban Development Minister Vinay Kumar Sorake also concurred that the State Congress would take disciplinary measures against party members who are contesting as independent candidates in the forthcoming MLC polls.

Speaking to media persons, the minister added that there is nothing wrong in aspiring and also contesting. “There are, however, limitations to doing so. The chief minister and the KPCC president both are of the opinion that the rebels, Jayaprakash Hedge and Harikrishna Bantwal, have involved in unnecessary controversy. There was no need to go for the extreme measure of contesting independently as rebels,” he insisted.

“The decision to field Prathapchandra Shetty was taken after consulting the block-level workers in the party and the decision was forwarded to the high command by Oscar Fernandez. The campaign is taken up in all the areas and would be intensified in the days to come,” he added.

He said the voters should not be misguided, as this would affect the forthcoming taluk panchayat and zilla panchayat elections, he added. He assured that the development initiatives would be introduced in both Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts after the polls in consultation with the chief minister.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A rare bamboo shrimp has been rediscovered on mainland India more than 70 years after it was last reported, confirming for the first time the presence of Atyopsis spinipes in the country. The find was made by researchers from the Centre for Climate Change Studies at Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai, during surveys in Karnataka and Odisha.

The team — shrimp expert Dr S Prakash, PhD scholar K Kunjulakshmi, and Mangaluru-based researcher Maclean Antony Santos — combined field surveys, ecological assessments and DNA analysis to identify the elusive species. Their findings, published in Zootaxa, resolve decades of taxonomic confusion stemming from a 1951 report that misidentified the species as Atyopsis moluccensis without strong evidence.

The shrimp has now been confirmed at two locations: the Mulki–Pavanje estuary near Mangaluru and the Kuakhai River in Bhubaneswar. Historical specimens from the Andaman Islands, previously labelled as A. moluccensis, were also found to be misidentified and actually belong to A. spinipes.

The rediscovery began after an aquarium hobbyist in Odisha spotted a shrimp in 2022, prompting systematic surveys across Udupi, Karwar and Mangaluru. Four female specimens were collected in Mulki and one in Odisha, all genetically matching.

Researchers warn the species may exist in very small, vulnerable populations as freshwater habitats face increasing pressure from pollution, sand mining and infrastructure development. All verified specimens have been deposited with the Zoological Survey of India for future reference.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.

Mangaluru: In a decisive move to tackle the city’s deteriorating sanitation infrastructure, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has announced a massive ₹1,200 crore action plan to overhaul its underground drainage (UGD) network.

The initiative, spearheaded by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV, aims to bridge "missing links" in the current system that have left residents grappling with overflowing sewage and environmental hazards.

The Breaking Point

The announcement follows a high-intensity phone-in session on Thursday, where the DC was flooded with grievances from frustrated citizens. Residents, including Savithri from Yekkur, described a harrowing reality: raw sewage from apartments leaking into stormwater drains, creating a "permanent stink" and turning residential zones into mosquito breeding grounds.

"We are facing immense difficulties due to the stench and the health risks. Local officials have remained silent until now," one resident reported during the session.

The Strategy: A Six-Year Vision

DC Darshan HV confirmed that the proposed plan is not a temporary patch but a comprehensive six-year roadmap designed to accommodate Mangaluru’s projected population growth. Key highlights of the plan include:

•    Infrastructure Expansion: Laying additional pipelines to connect older neighborhoods to the main grid.

•    STP Crackdown: Stricter enforcement of Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) regulations. While new apartments are required to have functional STPs, many older buildings lack them entirely, and several newer units are reportedly non-functional.

•    Budgetary Push: The plan has already been discussed with the district in-charge minister and the Secretary of the Urban Development Department. It is slated for formal presentation in the upcoming state budget.
