Mangaluru, Jan 12: Karnataka Home Minister Ramalinga Reddy on Friday laid foundation stone for the police quarters being constructed at a cost of Rs 6.28 crore at Shaktinagar in Mangaluru.
The project is part of the chief minister Siddaramaiah led Karnataka government’s Police Gruha 2020, a scheme to provide housing quarters to all police personnel by 2020. The scheme, in totality, envisages construction of 36,000 houses in the State by 2020 in several phases.
Speaking on the occasion, the Minister said that the project was expected to be completed in 16 months. “There will be two blocks for officers and constables and they will have 8 and 24 flats respectively. Every flat will have one living room, dining hall, two bedrooms, a kitchen and bathrooms,” he said.
"In the first phase of Police Gruha 2020 the government intends to build 11,000 houses for the police. Among them, over 2,500 houses have already been handed over. The construction work of 4,500 houses are about to be completed. Another 4,500 will be built this year,” he said.
He said that for Mangaluru alone the state government has approved 160 new houses and the construction works are underway.
He also said that previous BJP government in Karnataka did not construct a single quarters for the police.
