Kasaragod, Dec 25: A gang of robbers burgled two neighbouring houses at the Muthiyakkal locality in Uduma and decamped with 25 sovereigns of gold ornaments along with US Dollar 3,500 and Indian Rs 15,000 in cash.

The police have launched a manhunt to nab the culprits.

The shocking incident occurred late on Friday as the robbers simultaneously burgled the two unoccupied houses, Bekal station sub-inspector U.P. Vipin said.

The robbers first broke open the rear door of the house of Sunil Kumar, an engineer on a Merchant Navy ship, and decamped with the U.S. dollars equivalent to Rs. 2.24 lakh, besides jewellery worth Rs. 5.34 lakh, Rs. 10,000 in cash, and two expensive mobile phones.

The other group of robbers burgled the nearby house of P. Prabhakaran by climbing up the first floor through the wall.

They gained entry by breaking open the door and decamped with Rs. 5,000 as the occupants had gone out.

The police were verifying the fingerprints obtained from the two houses and the International Mobile Equipment Identity numbers of the stolen mobile phones.

The police have also alerted local currency exchange firms and banks to keep a close watch of people exchanging U.S. dollars, the senior police official said. No persons had been taken into custody in connection with the incidents, he said.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.
