Hassan, Nov 17: Janata Dal (Secular) on Saturday invited former Congress MLA R Roshan Baig to join the party and contest the Shivajinagar assembly bypoll.

Baig, one of the 17 disqualified MLAs whose rebellion led to the collapse of the Congress-JD(S) coalition government, remained noncommittal, only thanking JD(S) for the offer.

Senior JD(S) leader and former state minister H D Revanna made the offer. “I have huge respect for Baig. He was with us when H D Deve Gowda was the chief minister. He later joined Congress, but that party never gave him his due. Baig never spoke poorly of Deve Gowda or H D Kumaraswamy after leaving JD(S). If he comes to our party, we will welcome him,” Revanna said.

Revanna said his party would be “very happy” if Baig contested and won the bypoll.

Later in the day, Baig responded by only saying: “Thank you.” He said he had not yet decided if he wanted contest the bypoll and he was still trying to gauge the voters’ mood in Shivajinagar.

People close to him said he might take a call on Sunday night.
