Bengaluru, Jul 28: The High Court of Karnataka has reserved its judgement on a petition by Popular Front of India leader Asim Sheriff, the fifth accused in the RSS worker Rudresh murder case.

Rudresh, an RSS worker, was murdered in broad daylight by motorbike-borne men in Kamaraja Road in Shivajinagar on October 16, 2016. The NIA later took over the probe. Sheriff was one of the five arrested in the case.
Sheriff pleaded the court to relieve himself from the charges filed against him by the National Investigation Agency (NIA). Having heard the arguments, the court reserved its order for August 1.
Dubbing the case politically motivated, Sheriff said he was falsely accused in the case. He said he was not present at the spot when the murder took place. Though he belonged to PFI, he clarified that it is not a banned outfit.
The NIA counsel reminded the court that Sheriff’s discharge plea was already rejected by the NIA court. “Besides being a PFI member, the accused also admitted to the police his involvement in the phone calls and SMS records. He admitted to have known about 'Patha Sanchalan’, the RSS function held in Shivajinagar,” the counsel said. Rudresh was killed while returning from the function.
The counsel also claimed Sheriff was in touch with Syed Ismail, a member of Indian Mujahideen. He also submitted that Rudresh’s murder was pre-planned in Aksa Masjid and Chota Charminar in the city.
The counsel said the accused had no personal enmity with Rudresh and the latter’s murder was purely due to his affiliations with a particular organization. The accused called Rudresh Kaufir or non-believer and slapped him before the murder, the counsel said.
