Mangaluru, Dec 6: In a bid to understand how pollution is affecting people’s health on a daily basis, Mangaluru’s Regional transport Office (RTO) in association with the Anti-Pollution Drive Foundation (APD) has released a paper revealing the ‘impact of air pollution on the health of outdoor workers’ at a unique event in the coastal city. The paper is based on the results of a series of Pulmonary Function Tests (PFT) conducted under APD’s ‘Shuddha Gaali’ project. This was the second phase to their previous assessment of traffic policemen and auto rickshaw drivers in Mangaluru.

Addressing the gathering at the programme held as a part of Air Pollution Awareness Month at the RTO on Tuesday, 4th December Karnataka State Pollution Control Board Senior Scientific Officer Jayaprakash Nayak said that it is the right time to instil the responsibility of environment conservation within us before it is too late. “Smoking vehicles like buses and auto rickshaws are the main reasons behind air pollution. Emission test centres must be more prudent with their approach towards such vehicles and restrict issuing emission test certificates to polluting vehicles if they do not pass the test,” he said.

Asserting the importance of each tree in the life span of a human being he said that each individual adult needs three cylinders of oxygen every day while a single cylinder of oxygen costs about Rs. 2500. “After doing the math, it is concluded that a person would need a minimum of Rs.7.5 crores worth of oxygen in their entire lifetime. A single tree can cater to the oxygen needs of hundreds of people. We as responsible citizens of this city must grow trees and reduce non bio-degradable wastes as much as possible”

Speaking on behalf of APD, K V Raman said, “Anti-Pollution Drive is doing every bit possible for us to have a safer environment with ambient air to breathe in. We should all take responsibility for our actions and join hands with them to form a better future for all of us”

Regional Transport Office Assistant Mr. Gangadhara warned about health hazards Mangaloreans are experiencing due to air pollution and emphasized people to take up healthy conveyance habits and reduce dependency on personalized vehicles for travel. Road Transport Office In-charge and coordinator of the event John Misquith and environmentalist Madhav Ullal were also present on the dais.

Speaking about planting trees to bring down the pollution level in Mangalore, Mr. Ullal said that given a chance to plant trees around Mangaluru, he will “definitely plant more trees and take responsibility for their growth”.

“Pulmonary Function Test Results show 35% have restrictive lung capacity.”

As part of the drive, a study was conducted on the impact of vehicular air pollution on outdoor workers such as street vendors, KSRTC bus drivers and city bus drivers. Pulmonary Function Test was done on 174 outdoor workers and the test results were announced at the programme. The report stated that 104 candidates (59.7%) showed normal health. However, 61 (35%) of them showed to be restrictive; 51 of the restrictive cases were non-smokers. A total of 9 candidates (3.4%) showed to be obstructive out of which 4 were smokers.

Dr. Irfan Kandal, a city based Pulmonologist said that this was a preliminary study and suggested DLCO (Diffusion Lung Capacity for Carbon Monoxide) and Chest Radiography (Chest X-Ray and CT Thorax) to conclude further results.

Commenting on the results of the PFT, APD Chief Abdullah A Rehman said, “Smoke emitting vehicles are a nuisance to society, public health and the economic profile of cities. Stringent action must be taken by Government to monitor emissions and tighten the norms thereby ensuring strict adherence to emission laws”.

He concluded by saying, “The Government must conduct more tests like these so as to get a better idea of air pollution on a larger scale. APD will always stand in support the Government to conduct the tests.”

The JD(S) on Tuesday, April 30, announced that former Indian Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda's grandson Prajwal Revanna has been suspended from the party temporarily until allegations against him over sexual abuse are probed.

Revanna and his father HD Revanna, also a JD(S) MLA, were booked on Sunday by the police for sexual harassment and criminal intimidation based on a complaint from a woman, who worked in their household.

"We welcome SIT against Prajwal Revanna. We've taken a decision to recommend our party's national president to suspend him from the party till the SIT investigation is completed, " JD(S) core committee president GT Devegowda said.

Revanna currently is not in India. Opposition members raised concerns over how he was allowed to leave the country.

"A decision was already made. Tomorrow it is to be recommended at the core committee meeting in Hubballi. Because he (Prajwal) is a Member of Parliament, it has to be done from Delhi. So I had requested Deve Gowda (JD(S) National President and former PM). Neither he (Gowda) nor I were aware of this issue," party chief H D Kumaraswamy has said yesterday. "Some issues have come out, based on that it has been decided yesterday itself to suspend (him). But many were in a hurry."

Prajwal, 33, represents the BJP-JD(S) alliance in the Lok Sabha election in Hassan, which happened on Friday.

Kumaraswamy alleged that Congress was manipulating facts to destroy the image of his family amid the controversy over the 'obscene' video case against his nephew Prajwal.

"We are not going to protect him, we will take severe action but the government's responsibility is more," Kumaraswamy said.

"This is the manipulation of Congress to destroy the image of our family. What is the role of Dewegowda Ji or me? We are not responsible for all those things. This is the individual issue of Prajwal Revanna. I am not in contact with him (Prajwal). It is the responsibility of the government to bring him before the law. Morally we have decided to make some decisions," Kumaraswamy told reporters on Tuesday.

Prajwal Revanna sex scandal

The state government under CM Siddaramaiah has formed a Special Investigation Team to look into the matter. In recent days, certain explicit video clips purportedly featuring Prajwal have circulated in Hassan.

In response, Revanna stated his willingness to cooperate with any investigation regarding the allegations of sexual abuse against his son and himself. He affirmed their readiness to accept any legal consequences if the accusations are substantiated.

Prajwal's father HD Revanna said that his son would appear for an SIT probe whenever he is asked to.

A case of sexual harassment and stalking was registered on Sunday against HD Revanna and Prajwal Revanna at Holenarasipur police station based on a complaint by their cook.

The complainant said she is a relative of Revanna's wife Bhavani.

She claimed that four months into her employment, Revanna began sexually harassing her, while his son Prajwal engaged in video calls with her daughter, engaging in "vulgar conversations."

She also alleged that there is a threat to her life as well as other members of her family.

Bengaluru, Apr 29: HD Revanna, the father of Karnataka MP Prajwal Revanna, has accused rivals of creating a conspiracy out of "old videos", a comment that is likely to raise a bigger row over his son's alleged link to the obscene videos.

A woman yesterday filed a police case against Prajwal Revanna and his father over alleged sexual assault. Prajwal Revanna, the Janata Dal (Secular) MP and grandson of former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda, has denied the latest allegations and also filed a police complaint over circulation of obscene videos, which he said were morphed.

Prajwal Revanna left for Germany on Saturday morning after voting in the Lok Sabha elections a day earlier.

"I know what kind of conspiracy is going on. I am not someone who'll get scared and run away. They have released something that was 4-5 years old. Expelling him from the party is left to the party high command," HD Revanna said.

When it was pointed out that an FIR has been registered against him too, he said, "There is politics, I don't want to comment. They (Congress) are in government and they will do whatever they want."

"All these things are not just today, the Deve Gowda family in the last 40 years (has been targeted by) Congress. CoD (now CID), Lokayukta probe, we have been facing for the last 40 years... I don't want to react to anything...let them take action in accordance with law," he said, adding that he hasn't spoken to Deve Gowda on the issue.

"Since the special investigation team is looking into the case, I will not react any further," HD Revanna said.

Yesterday, a first information report was filed against the father-son duo on charges of sexual harassment, intimidation and outraging the dignity of a woman.

The survivor alleged both sexually assaulted her, and when Revanna's wife was not home, he touched her inappropriately and used to sexually assault her. The complainant alleged Prajwal Revanna also misbehaved with her daughter over a video call. "My daughter blocked his number after repeated calls," the complainant said.

The latest FIR comes when Prajwal Revanna is already in the middle of a controversy after some objectionable videos went viral on social media allegedly involving him.

Prajwal Revanna is seeking a fresh term in the Lok Sabha from as a National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate from Hassan.
