Ullal, Sept 3: The Social Democratic Party of India has made impressive gains in the just concluded polls to Ullal City Municipal Council, which falls under the assembly constituency of Congress stalwart and Dakshina Kannada district in-charge minister U T Khader.

The Congress, which had ruled the civic body for a prolonged period, has apparently suffered a blow as it failed to get clear majority in the August 31 election, which was the first election after the upgradation of the Town Municipal Council into the City Municipal Council.

In 2013 ULB polls, the Congress had secured 17 seats out of 27 in then Ullal TMC. BJP had won 7 seats while the debutante SDPI had bagged 1 seat. Independents had won 2 wards.

In 2018 polls, the Congress secured only 13 seats in 31-strong Ullal CMC. The BJP’s number of seats also reduced from 7 to 6. On the other hand, the SDPI has registered victory in 6 wards. Interestingly, Janata Dal (Secular) has bagged 4 seats, while independent candidates managed to win 2 wards.

The Congress can hold the reigns in Ullal CMC with the support of 4 JD(S) candidates. However, Mr Khader told reporters here on Monday that the party doesn’t hesitate to sit in the opposition. He has also ruled out the possibility of any alliance with SDPI.

The results, however, underscore the emergence of SDPI as a strong contender to the second position in the CMC. The consolidation of SDPI as a political entity also resulted in the weakening of Congress, and destruction of Left party which has failed to secure even one seat.

It is a time to Mr. Khader Bai to introspect his constituvency.

Last MLA election, he won just because of Congress Party and not because of him.
