Mangaluru, Jan 29: The Dakshina Kannada district unit of Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) has decided to observe the death anniversary of Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi as ‘Protest Day’ on Friday, as a mark of protest against adulation of his assassin Nathuram Godse by certain factions in the country.

Announcing this at a press meet here on Thursday, SDPI district unit general secretary Riyaz Farangipete said that certain saffron groups were trying to portray Gandhiji’s assassin as a national hero and were trying to construct a worship house in his honour, which was a shameful issue for the entire country. To protest against this move and to spread awareness in this regard, the organisation will observe a protest day on Friday with the declaration of ‘Gandhiji’s assassins are national assassins’ nation-wide, he said.

He said that the SDPI district committee and its members would organise a public protest meeting in front of the deputy commissioner’s office in Mangaluru at 3.30 p.m. on Friday, and national committee member Ilyas Mohammed Thumbe will deliver the main address. Various SDPI state and district leaders will participate in the meeting and SDPI district president Nawaz Ullal will preside over the meeting, he informed.

Prior to the protest meeting, a procession will be held from Mangaluru City Corporation in Lalbagh at 3 p.m. to the venue of the protest meeting after garlanding the bust of Gandhiji at Lalbagh, he added.

SDPI state committee members Alphonso Franco and Jaleel Krishnapura, Nawaz Ullal and Ansar Sadat were present in the press conference.
