Ullal, Jul 18: With the intensified sea erosion following the heavy rains over the last week in the coastal areas, three houses along the coast near Mogaveerpatna in Ullal have been damaged, while over 25 houses face the risk of danger.
Following heavy rains on Thursday, the waves along the shore near Mogaveerpatna began crashing violently and intensified the sea erosion resulting in damage to three houses close to the shore. The houses of Mogaveerpatna residents Gauri Sudheer, Chanchalakshi Lokesh and Chitra Babu have been damaged by the sea erosion. Due to the damage and instability of the houses, the families began evacuating their houses and leaving to stay with their relatives.
With the local residents living in fear of losing their homes to the intensity of the sea waves, the village accountant Poornachandra Tejaswi visited the danger-prone areas and assured them of providing them shelter at ganji (gruel) centres and also providing compensation if necessary.
A resident living on the coast fears being swept away by the crashing waves in the middle of the night. She and her family fear sleeping at night, as the waves seep into the house along with stones and pebbles. As the sole bread earner in the family, she finds it difficult to make ends meet, and in such a situation, it would be nearly impossible to build another house to reside. Although they were promised by the concerned authorities of building a sea barrier and dumping stone boulders to check the sea erosion, she grieved that no steps were taken by the local authorities to check the problem.
She said that there was no way for her family to live in the house without any compensation.
