Mysuru, May 9: The services of 35,000 civic workers in municipal corporations, councils and town panchayats will be regularised by March 2017, Karnataka State Safai Karmachari Commission chairman Narayan has said.
There are 35,000 civic workers in 12 municipal corporations, 215 municipal councils and 44 town panchayats in the state. After regularisation, their monthly wages will be Rs 10,000 to Rs 12,000, he said. The workers will get all benefits of Group D' employees. They will also be eligible for Employees' Provident Fund (EPF), he said.
Narayan said contractors were exploiting civic workers by paying them wages less than the basic pay. He also said that crores of rupees released for the welfare of the civic workers had lapsed due to official apathy. Under a new housing scheme for civic workers, financial aid will be extended to those wishing to build houses.
Survey
Karnataka has 15,375 manual scavengers, according to a survey conducted by the Centre. The commission is conducting its own survey to identify manual scavengers in the state. The survey has already begun in rural areas and will start in urban areas on June 1, he added.
