Dharward, Nov 5: Hundreds of people belonging to different faiths took part in the processions of panjas' taken out as part of Muharram in the district recently.
Shiites took out a procession to mourn the martyrdom of Iman Husain and resorted to self-flagellation. The procession of panjas', which is the main feature of Muharram in this part of the State, witnessed a huge turnout.
Shiites, Hindus and other communities took part in the celebrations and offered tribute for the panjas' installed in different dargas'.
The rituals related to the celebrations of the Muharram here appear to be the mixture of the Muslim and Hindu traditions.
While prayers are offered in Muslim style, rituals like fire walking are also held. In Dharwad, processions converged at Bhus Galli near Mangalwar Pet.
The panjas' were later carried to streams for immersion, and hundreds of people offered puja to the panjas' along the way.
Similar processions were taken out at Navalur, Saidapur and Hosayallapur. Large number of devotees turned out at the historic Hatel Badsha Darga in the fort area where the panjas are being worshiped for the last several centuries.
A group of the Irani Muslim youths of Shiite sect took out a separate procession near the Kalghatgi road.
