Shiradi Ghat to be closed from Dec 15 to May 15

Mangaluru, Nov 16: A meeting chaired by Forest, Environment and Ecology Minister, and Dakshina Kannada District-in-Charge Minister B Ramanath Rai has decided to postpone the closer date of Shiradi Ghat to implement road development works, from December 1 to December 15, due to various reasons here on Saturday. The Ghat will remain closed till May 15 of 2015.

The Central government has approved two works- providing rigid pavement from 237th km milestone to 250.62 km milestone of NH 75 with an estimated cost of Rs 69.90 crore, and strengthening from 216 km milestone to 237 km milestone and providing rigid pavement from 250.62 km to 263 km with an estimated cost of Rs 85.28 crore. In the fourth meeting related to the matter, the minister said that the strengthening of alternative roads should be finished at the earliest.

Sand scarcity

Sand scarcity has become a big problem, especially in Hassan and Madikeri region. The concretisation of Heggadde- Kempuhole Guesthouse route (13 km) is entrusted to M/s Ocean Construction Company Limited.

There is a need of 30,507 cubic metre of sand, but the company has collected only 8,000 cum (26 pc) of sand. The company should collect at least 50 per cent of sand to start work. For Gulagale- Heggadde stretch asphaltation (21 km) and Kempuhole Guesthouse – Addahole (13 km) concretisation, the tender process is under progress and it would finish within one and half month. This work would need 34,880 cum sand, NH Executive Engineer Nataraj said.

The Minister said that the government will solve at the earliest. Karnataka Road Development Corporation Limited (KRDCL) Executive Engineer Suban said that in Mani-Madikeri-Mysore road, in landslide affected Koinadu, road development work will be completed by December 15.

The minister said that if possible both the works can be started simultaneously, so that they can be finished at the earliest which would help not only public, but also to transport and police departments for maintenance. He suggested police and transport department officials to form a special team to control vehicles during the period.

The NHAI officials explained that separate routes have been identified for ordinary (category A) and multi- axel vehicles (category B).

Additional Deputy Commissioner Sadashiva Prabhu, SP Dr Sharanappa were present.

Melkar, Dec 17: The 17th Annual Day and Graduation Ceremony of Melkar Women’s PU and Degree College, themed “Fusion-2K25,” was celebrated with dignity and enthusiasm, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s academic journey. The programme reflected the college’s steadfast commitment to academic excellence, character building, and the holistic development of students.

The event was inaugurated by Mr. Asif Mohammed, whose presence greatly enriched the occasion. The celebration was further graced by the chief guests Mr. P. B. Ahmed Mudassir and Mr. Nissar Fakeer Mohammed, along with the distinguished guests of honour Mr. B. A. Nazeer and Mr. Ibrahim Gadiyar. In their inspiring addresses, the guests encouraged the graduating students and appreciated the dedicated efforts of the management, faculty, and students.
