Hassan, Sept 5: The Shiradi Ghat stretch of National Highway 75 was finally reopened for light motor vehicles today.
The 26-km ghat stretch was closed for three weeks owing to massive landslips triggered by heavy rains and floods last months.
The National Highways Division, after considering experts’ opinion, had suggested that the Shiradi Ghat stretch of the highway could be opened for the light vehicles.
“Based on their suggestion, we have decided to allow vehicles from today,” said Hassan Deputy Commissioner Rohini Sindhuri.
The officer also made it clear that the NH officers would be responsible in case of any untoward incident after vehicles were allowed.
The simultaneous closure of Shiradi and Sampaje ghats, the two major thoroughfares connecting the coast with the rest of the State since the second week of August, had set off widespread resentment among regular travellers.
Gopal Pai, a native of Mani in Dakshina Kannada who works in Bengaluru, even launched a Twitter campaign, #connectustomangalore, with like-minded people. The campaign saw nearly 7,000 tweets on August 25.
