Hassan, Jul 9: D K Shivakumar, Minister for Water Resources has said the State government would complete the integrated Yettinahole drinking water project and provide water to parched areas at the earliest.

Speaking to reporters after visiting the project site in Sakleshpur taluk along with officers and people’s representativeson Sunday, he said: “About 70% of the civil works pertaining to Sakleshpur taluk has been completed. For the rest of the work, issues linked with land acquisition have to be tackled,” he said.

The Minister said it would be difficult to put a deadline for the work as it involves many complex issues. “The work has to be done in a place known for continuous heavy rain. It will be a challenge to complete it within the stipulated time. However, the government is committed to completing it at the earliest. That is why I visited the place within a few days of taking charge of the department,” he said.

Earlier in the day, speaking to presspersons, K. Jaiprakash, Secretary, Water Resources Department, said there was no reason to doubt the availability of water in the Western Ghats for the project. Experts have analysed the availability of water scientifically.

“A vast amount of water has been reaching the Arabian Sea. This is the project that will utilise a small fraction of that,” he said. The project is designed to divert 24 tmc ft of water towards dry areas.
