Shivamogga violence: Prohibitory orders extended; PFI activists among 182 held

Shivamogga, Feb 26: The prohibitory orders enforced in Shivamogga in wake of the communal clash that erupted following the rally taken out by the Popular Front of India (PFI) last week will be extended till March 2, according to Deputy Commissioner V P Ikkeri.

In the wake of the violent incidents that took place during the rally held on February 19, prohibitory order was clamped in the city limits till 6 a.m. of February 26. It was decided to extend the prohibitory orders till March 2 to maintain peace and order, he said at a press conference here on Wednesday.

The prohibitory orders will be in place from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. from February 26 to March 2. The sale of liquor has also been banned when the prohibitory orders will be in place, he added.

Speaking on the occasion, M. Nanjundaswamy, Inspector-General of Police of Eastern range, said that with the objective to maintain peace and order in the city, movement of two-wheelers has also been banned from 9.30 p.m. to 5 a.m. till March 2. If people have to commute by two-wheeler at that time, they have to take passes from the jurisdictional police station, he added.

Police said that it had come to their notice that miscreants who indulged in arson and group clashes during the night were plying on two-wheelers. While the police were checking vehicles, seven persons on two-wheelers were found possessing lethal weapons, Mr. Nanjundaswamy said.

According to him, as many as 182 persons including PFI activists have been arrested for their alleged role in the violence. Replying to a query, he said that police would soon book cases against persons engaged in spreading provocative messages through social media during the violence.

Regarding the incident of killing of Manjunath by miscreants on the night of February 20, he said that a special police team headed by an officer of the rank of the Deputy Superintendent of Police has been formed to investigate into the case. The culprits would be nabbed soon, he added.

Mr. Nanjundaswamy added that a decision on lifting the prohibitory orders will be taken after assessing the situation on March 2.
