Siddalingaiah to preside, Na D'Souza to open Alva's Nudisiri

Mangalore, Nov 7: Dalit poet-activist Siddalingaiah will preside over the annual literary event Alva's Nudisiri - 2014, to be held at Vidyagiri in Moodbidri from November 14 to 16.

The three-day event organised by Alva's Education Foundation will be on the theme “Karnataka: Varthamanada Thallanagalu” (Karnataka: Issues at present).

Addressing mediapersons on Friday, Alva's Education Foundation Chairman Dr M Mohan Alva said that litterateur Na D'Souza will inaugurate the convention. Writers Shivananda Kalave, Nagesh Hegade, Mohan Chandraguthi, Gururaj Karjagi, A Eshwaraiah Manipal, K R Sandhya Reddy, Prathibha Nandakumar and P N Ramachandran will present papers at the four key-sessions of the literary event.

Apart from the main sessions, special talks will be delivered by experts in various fields including D S Chowgule, Manohar Prasad, Pundikai Ganapaiah Bhat, Nataraj Huliyar, Niranjan Vanalli, Y S V Datta, Prof Shashikala Gurupur and Veena Bannanje. Poets Subbu Holeyar, Raghunath C H, Vikarm Visaji, H Govindaiah, B R Lakshman Rao, Ravishankar Shetty Oddambettu, Prof H S Shivaprakash and Raziya D B will recite poems at “Kavi Samaya Kavi Namana.”

Multi-language sessions

In order to support local languages, literary sessions exclusively meant for Tulu, Konkani and Beary literature will be held at Alva's Nudisiri this season. Dr Alva said that programme under the banner “Tulu-Konkani-Beary Siri” will be held every evening for an hour on a parallel stage, which will feature talks by those who have worked for the particular language and felicitation to renowned persons. Cultural programmes depicting the three cultures will also be held.

Like every year, participants can enjoy cultural programmes in multiple stages every evening. Over 200 book and food stalls will be set up in the venue. Facilities for OOD will be made available for teachers and lecturers of schools and colleges who participate in the convention, Alva said.

Alva's Nudisiri Award

Alva's Nudisiri Award - 2014, will be conferred on 10 achievers in various fields. They include, language researcher Sangamesh Savadattimutt, litterateur Prof Vasanth Kushtagi, writer and columnist Prof H S Shivaprakash, reasearcher Prof S Shettar, poet Malathi Pattanashetty, actor and director T S Nagabharana, organiser Prof Heranje Krishna Bhat, folklore expert and singer Banandur Kempaiah, Yakshagana artiste Mantapa Prabhakar Upadhya, danseuse Vasundhara Doraswamy and sculptor Ashwathpura Baburaya Acharya.

Melkar, Dec 17: The 17th Annual Day and Graduation Ceremony of Melkar Women’s PU and Degree College, themed “Fusion-2K25,” was celebrated with dignity and enthusiasm, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s academic journey. The programme reflected the college’s steadfast commitment to academic excellence, character building, and the holistic development of students.

The event was inaugurated by Mr. Asif Mohammed, whose presence greatly enriched the occasion. The celebration was further graced by the chief guests Mr. P. B. Ahmed Mudassir and Mr. Nissar Fakeer Mohammed, along with the distinguished guests of honour Mr. B. A. Nazeer and Mr. Ibrahim Gadiyar. In their inspiring addresses, the guests encouraged the graduating students and appreciated the dedicated efforts of the management, faculty, and students.

The annual report was presented by the Principal, Mr. Abdul Majeed S, highlighting the institution’s academic progress, notable achievements, and extracurricular accomplishments during the academic year.

The presidential address was delivered by the esteemed Chairman of Melkar Women’s PU and Degree College, Dr. Haji S. M. Rasheed, who emphasized the vital role of education in empowering women and shaping responsible citizens. He also stressed the importance of discipline, dedication, and perseverance in achieving success.

Cultural programmes and academic recognitions formed an integral part of the celebration, showcasing the talents and achievements of the students. The graduation ceremony was a proud moment for the outgoing students as they were formally conferred degrees and wished success in their future endeavours.

Ms. Mashmooma Fathima served as the Master of Ceremonies. The welcome address was delivered by Ms. Fathima Nida, and the programme concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Ms. Ayisha Suhana.

The event successfully achieved its objectives and was highly appreciated by the guests and attendees.

Udupi, Dec 15: What was meant to be a post-pilgrimage gathering turned tragic in Padukere village of Brahmavar taluk, Udupi district, late Sunday night, when a clash among youths escalated into a fatal assault, leaving one man dead.

The victim has been identified as 30-year-old Santosh Mogaveera, a resident of Padukere.

According to preliminary information, the incident took place during a late-night drinking party involving a group of local youths who had recently returned after completing their pilgrimage to the Sabarimala shrine. An argument reportedly broke out among the group and soon escalated into a violent confrontation.

During the ensuing brawl, Santosh Mogaveera was allegedly assaulted and collapsed at the spot after sustaining serious injuries. He was rushed by local residents to a private hospital in Brahmavar, where doctors declared him dead.

On receiving information, senior police officials, including Brahmavar Circle Inspector Gopikrishna, Kota Police Sub-Inspector Praveen Kumar T, Station ASI Manthesh Jabagoudar, and head constables Pradeep and Ashok, visited the spot and conducted an inspection.

Police have taken four youths into custody in connection with the incident. A case has been registered at the Kota police station, and further investigation is underway to ascertain the exact sequence of events leading to the death.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.
