Bengaluru, Jan 25: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to confer Bharat Ratna, the country's highest civilian honour, on Siddaganga seer Shivakumara Swami.

Highlighting the seer's achievements over the years, Siddaramaiah, in a letter to the prime minister, said even at the age of 110 years, the seer continued to render "exemplary service" to the community at large and the poor in particular.

Siddaramaiah's letter comes days after BJP leader and former chief minister S M Krishna made the same appeal to Modi through a letter.

The Mutt and Siddaganga Education Society, under the stewardship of Shivakumara Swami, is serving in the areas of philanthropy, education and spiritual activities. "The Society established by the Swami has more than 130 educational institutions mostly in rural and semi-urban areas. These institutions are providing education ranging from Sanskrit studies to engineering and technology, thus making a rich contribution to the educational development of the people. The Mutt also hosts more than 9,000 children who are provided free food, shelter and education."

Siddaramaiah said the seer, through his selfless devotion, had created a band of alumni who were making "enormous contribution to the society in various walks of life".

"The seer's service to the people deserves recognition at the highest level through the award of Bharat Ratna. I therefore humbly request you to confer the title of Bharat Ratna to the seer who is referred to as the 'Walking God' by legions of his devotees and admirers," his letter states.

Mangaluru: In a decisive move to tackle the city’s deteriorating sanitation infrastructure, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has announced a massive ₹1,200 crore action plan to overhaul its underground drainage (UGD) network.

The initiative, spearheaded by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV, aims to bridge "missing links" in the current system that have left residents grappling with overflowing sewage and environmental hazards.

The Breaking Point

The announcement follows a high-intensity phone-in session on Thursday, where the DC was flooded with grievances from frustrated citizens. Residents, including Savithri from Yekkur, described a harrowing reality: raw sewage from apartments leaking into stormwater drains, creating a "permanent stink" and turning residential zones into mosquito breeding grounds.

"We are facing immense difficulties due to the stench and the health risks. Local officials have remained silent until now," one resident reported during the session.

The Strategy: A Six-Year Vision

DC Darshan HV confirmed that the proposed plan is not a temporary patch but a comprehensive six-year roadmap designed to accommodate Mangaluru’s projected population growth. Key highlights of the plan include:

•    Infrastructure Expansion: Laying additional pipelines to connect older neighborhoods to the main grid.

•    STP Crackdown: Stricter enforcement of Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) regulations. While new apartments are required to have functional STPs, many older buildings lack them entirely, and several newer units are reportedly non-functional.

•    Budgetary Push: The plan has already been discussed with the district in-charge minister and the Secretary of the Urban Development Department. It is slated for formal presentation in the upcoming state budget.

Mangaluru, Dec 20: City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy has issued a high-alert warning to vehicle owners regarding a surge in cyber fraud targeting those looking to pay traffic violation fines. Fraudsters are reportedly exploiting recent government discount schemes on traffic penalties to deceive citizens.

The Scam: How Fraudsters Strike

Criminals are using SMS, WhatsApp, and social media to circulate suspicious links and APK files (Android application packages). They claim these apps allow users to pay e-challans at a discount.

•    Device Hacking: Downloading these unauthorized apps gives hackers full access to the victim's smartphone.

•    Financial Theft: Once the phone is compromised, fraudsters intercept OTPs and personal data to drain bank accounts.

•    Phishing Sites: Fake websites mimicking official portals are also being used to harvest banking credentials.

Already, two residents within Mangaluru city limits have reported significant financial losses after falling victim to these fraudulent apps.
