In a meeting attended by the legislators from coastal and Malnad region held at Vikasa Soudha in Bangalore on Monday, Home Minister K J George said that these operators were using Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) to make calls, thereby making it difficult to track the phone numbers. "The SIT will coordinate with Interpol to track such VOIP calls and trace the criminals operating from outside the country," he said.
Health Minister U T Khader, State DG and IGP Lalrokhuma Pachau and ADGP (Law and Order) M N Reddi and three prominent realtors from Mangalore were present in the meeting. The development comes nearly two weeks after home minister received threatening calls from underworld.
The home minister also said that these operators have their own network and gang members in coastal and malnad district to collect the ransom money. Besides calls to Malnad and coastal business men, businessmen involved in real estate in Bangalore also get threatening calls from aboard. While some lodge complaint, some don't. Recently, Mangalore police arrested a henchman working for an anti-social element based in foreign country.
Police sources said two major operators are making extortion calls to businessmen in coastal region and the tentacles have spread to Malnad in the wake of increase of price for areca nut.
"If any one gets a call for ransom, he should not panic. If complaint is lodged, the SIT will take over the investigation and track the people behind it. We can not allow some callers to hold the businessmen for ransom. The structure of the SIT will be announced soon,'' Mr George said.
Meanwhile, the Dakshina Kannada police have been told to keep a watch on the undertrials, who get bail under unnatural circumstances.
