Mysuru, Apr 8: Controversial Kannada writer S L Bhyrappa has finally admitted that he had committed malpractice to pass his Mathematics exam in high school.
He said, he had to choose Science and Maths as optional in high school as he was deemed to be a ‘bright student’, but found Maths very difficult.
“I had written a few Algebra formulae on my fingers, used them to solve a few problems and washed them midway of the exam. I admitted to the malpractice before the headmaster to convince him to issue me transfer certificate to join Arts subjects in intermediate course,” he said.
Recalling his school days, when he solely depended on freeships, he said, it was the teachers’ love and care that made him what he is today. “The teachers used to scold us ‘Mundeganda’ lovingly. It was not taken literally. Nowadays it has turned abusive. Don’t ever try to use the word in the public. You may be attacked for being anti-widow marriage,” he said.
Comparing his teachers with the present day ones, he said, highly knowledgable persons with an inclination for research should be appointed as teachers in primary schools to strengthen the education system.
“It is unfortunate that none of the Indian universities figure in the list of top 250 universities in the world.
But, it is not a major issue. Strengthening should start right from the primary school level. Children should be taught to read books, gather information, reason and research. Teachers should be able to go beyond textbooks,” he said.
