Bantwal, Mar 16: The last rites of slain techie Prabha Shetty was performed at her parents’ farm in Amtur village, 40-km away from Mangaluru on Sunday, in a solemn ceremony attended by family and friends.

Her husband, Arun Kumar, lit the pyre at the farmhouse at 6.15 p.m., accompanied by her three brothers and her 75-year-old father Mahabala Shetty. The body was brought by a chartered flight from Bengaluru to Mangaluru around noon.

Preceding the cremation, the body was kept for public to pay homage.

Anish Philip, a senior manager at Mindtree, said that the company was working with the family regarding compensation to Prabha, who had served it for more than 10 years. Prabha Arun Kumar was supposed to have completed her work in Australia and return to India in April.

Abrahim Moses, another senior manager at Mindtree, said that the company has been with Arun Kumar and Prabha’s elder brother Shankar Shetty right through from Sydney to Amtur. While a team was with the family members in Australia, he and two other colleagues travelled with the family from Bengaluru. It took time for the company to get some certificates — death, embalming, health — from the Indian Embassy for bringing the body here after autopsy, Mr. Moses said.

Meanwhile, among the many who paid condolences were Prabha’s primary school teachers Ottila Pinto and Sister Cecila. “We have lost a calm and quiet student,” Ms. Pinto said. Prabha’s primary school classmate Florine D'souza was overcome with emotion while recalling the days she walked down to the school with Prabha.
