Mangaluru, May 24: As many as 35 traffic cops in the city, who are diagnosed with weak lung functioning due to dust pollution, were provided with scientifically designed anti-pollution mask costing Rs 400 each. The masks were distributed to the police personnel during a function held at Padua High School auditorium recently.

The project is part of an initiative taken by APD Foundation, which is non profit NGO, which germinated from Mangaluru in October 2015. APD has been working with a mission to work towards mitigating air pollution and improvise public, environment and economic health of India.

In his welcome and keynote address, Abdullah A Rehman, Founder and Chief Coordinator of APD Foundation said Anti-Pollution Drive (APD) Foundation, an NGO, in association with Dept. Of Respiratory Medicine, Yenepoya Medical College, had conducted a pulmonary function test for Mangaluru City Traffic Police. 115 traffic cops had undergone pulmonary function test conducted by the Foundation. The test showed significant amount of traffic personnel were affected.

"The results revealed that 22.3% of the policemen, having five and less years of service were showing signs of restrictive lungs. Another 26.3% policemen having more than five years of experience are also showing restrictive lung capacity. Pulmonologists from Yenepoya Medical College concluded that there is a significant correlation in lung function and exposure to vehicular pollutants. The number of traffic police with restriction increased with the duration of exposure," said Abdullah A Rehman.

As an immediate remedy to the problem APD choose to provide the affected police personnel with scientifically designed mask which give a higher degree of protection against pollution, he said.

The masks were distributed by MLA J. R. Lobo. He symbolically adorned the first mask on ACP (Traffic) Udaya Nayak.

Speaking on the occasion MLA JR Lobo said, “When I was small, I did not hear about Bisleri water, but now without Bisleri, we do not organize any programmes. We were drinking water from the wells which were scientifically very healthy. The city is now highly polluted and in the coming years, we may have to carry oxygen cylinders with us while we go out.”

Addressing the gathering, the city police commissioner M Chandra Sekhar said cops needs to give more emphasis for their health. “It is very rare to find people who think about the police. The police work under pressure to maintain law and order. If any difficult situation takes place they rush to the spot to bring things under control and there are several situations where they work under immense pressure. Since there is lot of work pressure in the department, policemen always neglect their health. Cops on emergency duties forget to go for medical check-ups," he said.

To make policemen fit and stress-free, Mangaluru city police will encourage cops to practice yoga regularly, the commissioner said. He also said the policemen should utilize the facilities given by the department and go for medical check-ups.

The minister for health and family welfare U T Khader launched “Health Remedies for better Lung” information pamphlet made by APD Foundation. Applauding the Foundation for emphasising the problems faced by the Traffic Policemen, he said that health department will extend all support for the effective implementation of health schemes for policemen.

“The traffic policemen diligently perform their duty undaunted by even the scorching heat. The department should take measures to ensure that they are provided with at least 5 litres of water every day,” he said.

MLA Moideen Bava also spoke on the occasion. DCP (Crime and Traffic) Dr Sanjeev Patil, ACP Uday Nayak, Dr Lakshmi Kanth, Deputy Environmental Officer of KSPCB and others were also present on the occasion. Mahesh Nayak compered the programme and Bhaskar Arasa delivered the vote of thanks.

Mangaluru: This year too, the Mangaluru International Airport has missed being designated as an embarkation point for the annual hajj pilgrimage.

According to the Haj Committee of India, not many are choosing Mangaluru as an embarkation point. Last year, although Mangaluru was notified as one of the embarkation points, the Union government removed it from the list at the last minute.

Several associations and organisations submitted memorandums to the Haj Committee of India, requesting the reinstatement of Mangaluru as one of the embarkation points, but their efforts have not materialised this year either.

The use of Mangaluru Airport as an embarkation point for the haj began in 2010. In 2019, 1,400 haj pilgrims flew from MIA to Saudi Arabia.

“When the number is less, it is difficult to consider it. It was the same issue as last year,” reacted AP Abdullakutty, chairman of the Haj Committee of India.
Mangaluru as an embarkation point served people from undivided Dakshina Kannada, Kodagu, Shivamogga, Uttara Kannada, and Chikkamagaluru districts.
Last year, the Muslim Central Committee of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts submitted a memorandum to Abdullakutty. They expressed their disappointment with Abdullakutty and stated that Mangaluru had a good number of applicants ever since it was identified as an embarkation point.
Now, they have to travel to Bengaluru.

UT Khader, speaker of the Karnataka legislative assembly, pointed out that several Union ministries are involved in the process of designating embarkation points for the haj.

“We are not sure why MIA as an embarkation point was removed. Is it because of fewer applications, or are airlines not willing to bid for MIA as an embarkation point? Is it only an issue with MIA as an embarkation point, or are there other airports in the country facing similar issues? We will try to find out and seek answers. Meanwhile, we will also start working at the earliest so that MIA is considered as an embarkation point for hajj next year,” said Khader.

rahulgowda.jpg

Bengaluru: Former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda on Wednesday slammed Rahul Gandhi’s "wealth redistribution promise", stating that only someone with no practical knowledge can speak like that.

“He is dreaming of a revolution. By talking about wealth redistribution, Rahul Gandhi has insulted and humiliated two Congress Prime Ministers who brought market reforms and increased the wealth of the nation,” he added, recalling the contribution of P V Narasimha Rao and Manmohan Singh in economic liberalisation.

Accusing Gandhi of indirectly trying to say that what the two Congress Prime Ministers did was wrong, Gowda said, "He (Rahul Gandhi) has torn up their economic reforms like he had torn up an ordinance (which sought to overturn the rule that disqualifies convicted MPs and MLAs) issued by (the then) Manmohan Singh (government)."

The 90-year-old JD(S) supremo ridiculed the Congress manifesto claiming that only a party that is sure of never coming to power can make as many promises.

“The Congress has promised so many things in its manifesto. The only party that is very sure of never coming to power will promise so much,” Gowda said at a press conference here.

He said the Congress wants to turn this country 'upside down' and the promises made by it indicated that it wants to come to power 'at any cost'.

“Rahul Gandhi wants to do a wealth survey and distribute the wealth. Does he think he is a mass leader,” Deve Gowda said.

Picking up points from the Congress manifesto ‘Nyay Patra’, Gowda said Rahul Gandhi wants to 'give 30 lakh new central government jobs and run this country'.

“There are only 40 lakh sanctioned jobs. How can he create 30 lakh more jobs overnight? How much will he pay these people? Where will he employ them,” he asked.

“Only someone with no practical knowledge can speak like this. (P) Chidambaram was the manifesto committee chairman. Does he agree with Rahul Gandhi’s immature economic ideas,” Gowda said.

Bengaluru: In a shocking revelation, a former member of Hassan Zilla Panchayat (ZP) has accused incumbent JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna of raping her multiple times over three years and videographing the alleged crime.

A case was registered by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) based on the statement by the 44-year-old survivor on Wednesday, May 1.

According to the First Information Report (FIR), the woman claimed that when she was a ZP member she used to visit the MLAs and MPs for various development works.

In one such instance in 2021, she met Prajwal seeking his help to get hostel seats for some female students at a local college. The woman, in her statement, said that since the MP was busy, she was asked to meet him the next day.

“The following day I visited the MP at his office and the MP's quarters in Hassan. The staff present there told me to wait on the first floor as there were many others in the hall. Prajwal spoke to some of the women waiting there, spoke with them and sent them off until I was the only one left,” the woman alleged.

As per the survivor, the MP then called her inside a room and she obliged.

“He held my hand, pulled me inside and locked the door. When I asked him why was he closing the door, he told me nothing would happen and made me sit on the bed. He said my husband should talk less and warned me of the consequences. He also said that because of my husband, his mother, Bhavani Revanna, missed the MLA ticket. He told me that if my husband wants to grow politically, I should listen to him [Prajwal],” the woman alleged.

Next, Prajwal allegedly told the woman to lie down on the bed and undress. When the woman refused and said that she would shout, Prajwal allegedly threatened her that he had a gun and warned of dire consequences for her and her husband.

The woman alleged that Prajwal took out his mobile phone and then raped her.

“He raped me and sexually assaulted me and recorded the act on his mobile phone,” the woman alleged. “He threatened to leak the video if I ever spoke about it and told me to be there whenever he wanted. After that, he used to video call me frequently, ask me to be naked during the call and raped me in multiple instances.”

The woman claimed that she was scared and did not make the incident public and chose to come forward after she learnt of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) set up by the Karnataka government to probe the alleged Hassan sex scandal.

A case was registered under Sections 376(2)(n) (commits rape repeatedly on the same woman), 506 (criminal intimidation), 354A(1)(physical contact and advances involving unwelcome and explicit sexual overtures), 354B (assault or use of criminal force to woman with intent to disrobe) and 354C (voyeurism) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and 66E (violation of privacy) of the Information Technology (IT) Act.

Prajwal is also accused in a sexual harassment case along with his father, Holenarasipur MLA HD Revanna, registered at the Holenarasipur police station in Hassan on April 28.
