Mangaluru, Dec 16: Promising batsman Aditya Somanna’s timely onslaught could not prevent Bedra Bulls claiming an eight-run victory over coastaldigest.com in a nail-biting match on the fourth day of Amaco Mangalore Premiere League 2015.

In a high-scoring thriller at the NMPT stadium coastaldigest.com made a spirited chase of the Bulls’ challenging 172-7 before being stopped just short on 165-8.

The victory put the team owned by Minister Abhaychandra Jain ahead in the Twenty-20 tournament with 4.0 points while pressure mounted on coastaldigest.com team, which had recorded a brilliant victory in the inaugural match.

Young fast bowler Zahoor Farooqi turned deadly for coastaldigest.com taking four crucial wickets including that of Ibrahim Athrady, the wicket keeper captain, one of the best pinch hitters in the region and stylish batsman Norman Castelino, who had scored half century in the inaugural match of MPL season 2.

Winning the toss Bedra Bulls elected to bat first and thanks to a great opening partnership between Naveen Shetty (55) and Mohammed Asif (47) the team scored 172 runs in allotted 20 overs setting a target of 173 for opponents.

While chasing the target, coastaldigest.com suffered double initial shock as both Ibrahim and Norman got out for duck. Vikram PS, who was the man of the match in the previous match, too lost his wicket before reaching double digit.

However, Mr Somanna exhibited his fighting spirit and took the match almost to the verge of victory before losing his wicket, which dampened the hopes of his team. Ultimately, an impressive 89 off... balls from Somanna was in vain.

Extraordinary fielding maneuver displayed by the Bedra Bulls players which resulted in run-out of two key players of coastaldigest.com also helped the former to win the match.

Mangaluru: In a decisive move to tackle the city’s deteriorating sanitation infrastructure, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has announced a massive ₹1,200 crore action plan to overhaul its underground drainage (UGD) network.

The initiative, spearheaded by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV, aims to bridge "missing links" in the current system that have left residents grappling with overflowing sewage and environmental hazards.

The Breaking Point

The announcement follows a high-intensity phone-in session on Thursday, where the DC was flooded with grievances from frustrated citizens. Residents, including Savithri from Yekkur, described a harrowing reality: raw sewage from apartments leaking into stormwater drains, creating a "permanent stink" and turning residential zones into mosquito breeding grounds.

"We are facing immense difficulties due to the stench and the health risks. Local officials have remained silent until now," one resident reported during the session.

The Strategy: A Six-Year Vision

DC Darshan HV confirmed that the proposed plan is not a temporary patch but a comprehensive six-year roadmap designed to accommodate Mangaluru’s projected population growth. Key highlights of the plan include:

•    Infrastructure Expansion: Laying additional pipelines to connect older neighborhoods to the main grid.

•    STP Crackdown: Stricter enforcement of Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) regulations. While new apartments are required to have functional STPs, many older buildings lack them entirely, and several newer units are reportedly non-functional.

•    Budgetary Push: The plan has already been discussed with the district in-charge minister and the Secretary of the Urban Development Department. It is slated for formal presentation in the upcoming state budget.

Mangaluru, Dec 20: City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy has issued a high-alert warning to vehicle owners regarding a surge in cyber fraud targeting those looking to pay traffic violation fines. Fraudsters are reportedly exploiting recent government discount schemes on traffic penalties to deceive citizens.

The Scam: How Fraudsters Strike

Criminals are using SMS, WhatsApp, and social media to circulate suspicious links and APK files (Android application packages). They claim these apps allow users to pay e-challans at a discount.

•    Device Hacking: Downloading these unauthorized apps gives hackers full access to the victim's smartphone.

•    Financial Theft: Once the phone is compromised, fraudsters intercept OTPs and personal data to drain bank accounts.

•    Phishing Sites: Fake websites mimicking official portals are also being used to harvest banking credentials.

Already, two residents within Mangaluru city limits have reported significant financial losses after falling victim to these fraudulent apps.

Mangaluru: Public transport in Mangaluru is set for a state-led transformation as the government moves to deploy 100 new electric govt buses to replace unreliable private services. The initiative aims to provide a dependable alternative to private operators who have been frequently "cutting trips," leaving thousands of commuters stranded.

The announcement was made by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV during a public phone-in session. The move specifically targets routes where private bus service has become erratic, ensuring that citizens no longer have to rely on a fluctuating private sector for their daily commute.

Restoring the Govt Presence

The transport crisis was brought to the forefront by Ramayya, a resident of Bajal, who highlighted a growing trend of private buses skipping morning and night trips. With the previous KSRTC (govt) services discontinued, residents have been left without a fallback option.

To fix this, the DC confirmed that the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme will bring 100 government-owned electric buses to the city:

•    Phased Deployment: The first 50 of the new 100 government buses are scheduled to arrive by March 2026.

•    State Infrastructure: Two new government depots, including one at Mudipu, are being prepared for operations.

•    Recruitment: The state has already begun training a new batch of government bus drivers to ensure the fleet is operational the moment it arrives.
