Sonia slams PM, asks people to reject those dividing society

October 3, 2015

Bhagalpur, Oct 3: Attacking Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP, Congress President Sonia Gandhi today asked people to reject those who divide society and make false promises and alleged that there was match fixing between his party and the RSS on quota issue.

SoniaGandhi

Addressing her maiden poll rally in Kahalgaon near here for the upcoming Bihar polls, she attacked BJP on the issue of reservation and said her party is committed to the Constitutional policy of quota for SCs/STs and the poor.

Describing Bihar polls as 'decisive', Sonia said, "Bihar is at a crucial crossroad. From here will be determined the future of both Bihar and the country. You have to decide whether from here on the country will move towards divisiveness or harmony."

Kick-starting her party's poll campaign, she said the Prime Minister is an expert in packaging and repackaging.

"Modi is trying to mislead the people of Bihar. The package he announced is more farcical than real. What is the truth of this package? Prime Minister, an expert in packaging and repackaging, has simply rehashed old schemes of previous governments and presented them as a new package. What not he has said to belittle the people of Bihar," she said, asking people to choose whether they are with secular forces or those which divide the country.

Raking up RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat's remarks on reservation, Sonia, without naming Bhagwat or RSS, said, "There is match fixing going on between Nagpur and BJP. But I want to tell you that Congress is committed to Constitutional provisions on SC, ST and OBC quotas."

Terming the 15-month rule of Modi as "harmful" for the country, the Congress chief said, "Except for a few corporates no one has benefited".

"You are all aware of the 15-months' record of BJP's policies that have adversely affected the country. Hasn't unemployment increased, have budget cuts not been made on welfare schemes for women, are farmers getting fair price for their produce," Sonia said mocking at the NDA alliance as "Bhanumati ka kunba" (coming together of odd forces).

"Put all your strength to defeat such forces who want to divide society, make false promises and who have hurt Bihar's pride," she said.

Seeking votes in the name of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, whom she described as an "able CM with a clean image", she also questioned the PM over his foreign trips taunting him for "spending more time abroad than at home".

Sonia also charged that Modi was discriminating with opposition chief ministers and states ruled by them and questioned his 'sabka saath, sabka vikas' slogan, asking whether people of such states did not belong to the country.

Sonia said, "Modi is discriminating against opposition chief ministers and the states ruled by them. He talks of 'sabka saath, sabka vikas' (development of all), but do people in these states not belong to the country."

Targeting the Prime Minister on his foreign trips, she said, "Narendra Modi loves going abroad very frequently. He loves embracing famous people but he has no time for the poor. He should go abroad but should stop playing politics of pretension with the people who reposed faith in him."

Sonia also reminded people of the rising unemployment, budget cuts in social welfare schemes and low MSP for farm produce to ask the gathering at the rally what the Modi rule had yielded for the poor.

Reminding people of the "ill-effects" of 15 months of Modi rule on the country, she exhorted people to put all their strength to defeat NDA, she said, "What all did he not say to belittle the people of Bihar. But he does not know that you are all aware and know about his political intentions."

Hailing people of the area, where BJP candidates were defeated both in last Lok Sabha polls and assembly bypolls, she said, "You have not believed in the hollow promises of Narendra Modi and have rejected BJP's policies."

She said Nitish Kumar is a chief minister with a clean image. She also took a dig at the NDA partners saying, "those who talked of secularism all along are today standing with communal forces".

“Thank you for the warm wishes, FM @DrSJaishankar. In celebration of our Independence Day, Israel and India will continue to deepen our ties and lead to greater prosperity,” Katz said in a post on X.

Earlier in the morning, Jaishankar posted on X a 2:03-minute video showcasing the India-Israel relationship through photos of various bilateral meetings between Prime Minister Narendra Modi, himself, and other Indian ministers with Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other ministers.

“Congratulate FM @Israel_katz and the people of Israel on the occasion of the 76th anniversary of Israel’s Independence. Mazel Tov!,” Jaishankar posted along with the video and repeated the same message in another post in Hebrew.

Meanwhile, President Droupadi Murmu wished her Israeli counterpart Isaac Herzog as she said on X, “I join the people of India in conveying our best wishes to President @Isaac_Herzog, and the people of Israel on the 76th anniversary of Israel’s independence.”

Both Murmu and Birla also included greetings in Hebrew.

Comedian Shyam Rangeela on Tuesday that he was barred from filing his nomination papers for the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections. He intended to challenge Prime Minister Narendra Modi from the Varanasi seat by contesting as an Independent candidate.

Despite attempts to file his papers since May 10, Rangeela alleged he was denied entry to the district magistrate's office on the day Prime Minister Modi filed his nomination. He also said that he is not taking any team from Sriganganagar to contest the Lok Sabha elections in Varanasi.

Shyam Rangeela further claimed that he has received several phone calls from Varanasi and people are willing to join him. "Winning or losing is a different matter, but I will contest the elections against the Prime Minister at any cost. I am not contesting elections to become famous, I am already very famous among the public."

The Congress party also waded into the controversy. Congress leader Surendra Rajput told news agency PTI that everyone is free to file a nomination including Prime Minister Modi. Rajput claimed that Rangeela was not getting nomination papers from the administration.

"Everyone is free to file a nomination including PM Modi. However, other people are not allowed to file their nominations from the constituency. A YouTuber named (Shyam) Rangeela, who wished to file a nomination from Varanasi, isn’t getting nomination papers from the administration. Why PM Modi is afraid of people? Let them contest against you," he said.

PM Modi, contesting for a third term, previously won the Varanasi seat by 4.8 lakh votes in 2019 and by 3.72 lakh votes in 2014. So far, 14 individuals, including mainstream political party candidates and independents, have filed their nominations for the Varanasi constituency.

Congress candidate Ajai Rai and Bahujan Samajwadi Party's Athar Ali Lari are among them. Rangeela, a YouTuber and mimic from Rajasthan’s Hanumangarh, rose to fame in 2017 with his act impersonating PM Modi. He has been critical of the Prime Minister and his policies, as evident in his videos.

New Delhi: In a big blow to Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, a Delhi court has ordered the framing of charges against the former Wrestling Federation of India chief in the sexual harassment allegations levelled by women wrestlers. The court has said there is sufficient evidence on record to do so, and the trial against him can now begin.

Friday's order by the Rouse Avenue court comes days after the BJP decided not to repeat Mr Singh, who is the party MP from Uttar Pradesh's Kaiserganj, as the candidate from the constituency and decided to field his son Karan Bhushan Singh instead.

The court has ordered the framing of charges under Indian Penal Code sections Ordered to frame charges against Brij Bhushan under sections 354 (outraging a woman's modesty), 354-A (sexual harassment) and 506 (criminal intimidation). The Delhi Police had filed a chargesheet against under these sections and one additional section - 354D (stalking) - on June 15 last year.

Charges should also be framed against the former assistant secretary of the Federation, Vinod Tomar, under Section 506, the court said.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Priyanka Rajpoot said the charges will be framed against Mr Singh for sexually harassing five wrestlers and that he stands discharged in the allegations levelled by the sixth.

The six-time MP has been at the centre of a huge political storm since last year, when sexual harassment charges were levelled against him and protesters had hit the streets led by Olympic medallists Sakshee Malikkh and Bajrang Punia, as well as Commonwealth Games and Asian Games medallist Vinesh Phogat.
