Bantwal, Nov 11: A local Congress leader and his wife were attacked by a group of miscreants belonging to Bharatiya Janata Party at their house at Mithamajalu in Sajipamooda in Bantwal taluk last night.
The victims are K Sanjeeva Poojary and his wife Vasanthi. Sanjeeva Poojary is a member Bantwal taluk panchayat and president of Brahmasri Narayana Guru Jnana Mandira, Sajipamooda. He is a confidante of Congress leader and Dakshina Kannada district in-charge minister B Ramanath Rai who is contesting from Bantwal for May 12 Karnataka assembly polls.
The attack took place at around 11:30 p.m. when Poojary had just returned home from the party office along with his friends.
In his complaint to the Bantwal Police, Poojary said, that a group led by BJP Bantwal assembly constituency unit vice president Srikanth Shetty attempted to murder him. Srikanth Shetty was in Congress and had joined the BJP recently.
The group allegedly attacked Sanjeev Poojary, his wife and a few Congress leaders including Shankar, Ammi and others. The injured are recuperating in a private hospital.
“As I was entering the house, the gang attacked me. They damaged the window panes of the house. They also damaged the glass of two cars with boulders. When my friends tried to prevent them, they too were assaulted by the group. When my wife Vasanthi tried to intervene, she too was attacked,” he said.
“I tried to prevent the gang from assaulting my wife and the gang assaulted me. When the information reached the police, the gang fled the spot. They had come to murder us,” he alleged. Additional SP Sajeeth, and Bantwal police personnel rushed to the spot.
Dakshina Kannada superintendent of police Ravikanthe Gowda on Friday said that an FIR was registered against Srikanth Shetty and 14 others in this regard on charges of illegal entry and assault.
Issuing a warning to political parties against indulging in violence, the SP said if the political parties take law into their hands, the police will take stern action against them.
