Special Purpose Vehicle with 17 directors to be set up for Smart Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Sep 24: Mangaluru, which has entered the Centre's Smart City list, is awaiting funds to the tune of Rs 1,500 crore under various heads from both state and central governments.

Mangaluru South MLA J R Lobo told media persons on Saturday that Rs 1,000 crore will be released for implementation of Smart City project. The city will also receive Rs 400 crore under ADB tranche II and Rs 150 crore under Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) scheme of the central government.

Mr Lobo said that a special purpose vehicle (SPV) with 17 directors will be formed for the implementation smart city project.

Accordingly, a SPV with state government principal secretary or any other secretary level officer as its head will be formed. The SPV will have officials from central and state governments as its directors, Lobo said adding the city will witness sea of development in the days to come through various schemes.

In the first phase, state and central governments will release Rs 200 crore each. In the second and third phases, city will receive Rs 150 crore each from both governments. Plans have been prepared to develop fishing port and Old Port in the city in the first phase.

Similarly, plans will be prepared for development of tourism, information technology sector and to develop railway station in the city on par with international standards. Entire administrative process in Mangaluru City Corporation will be made digital with the use of more computers, he said.

A proposal to convert Manglauru into a sports city is also a component of the Smart City project, Lobo said. Development of city areas, providing drinking water, underground drainage and several other major infrastructure development works will be taken up in three years, he added.

Mangaluru, Dec 20: City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy has issued a high-alert warning to vehicle owners regarding a surge in cyber fraud targeting those looking to pay traffic violation fines. Fraudsters are reportedly exploiting recent government discount schemes on traffic penalties to deceive citizens.

The Scam: How Fraudsters Strike

Criminals are using SMS, WhatsApp, and social media to circulate suspicious links and APK files (Android application packages). They claim these apps allow users to pay e-challans at a discount.

•    Device Hacking: Downloading these unauthorized apps gives hackers full access to the victim's smartphone.

•    Financial Theft: Once the phone is compromised, fraudsters intercept OTPs and personal data to drain bank accounts.

•    Phishing Sites: Fake websites mimicking official portals are also being used to harvest banking credentials.

Already, two residents within Mangaluru city limits have reported significant financial losses after falling victim to these fraudulent apps.
