Bengaluru, Aug 10: A college student lost his life in a fight with friend over a trivial but sensitive issue at a hotel room at VV Puram, near KR Market in Bengaluru.

The deceased has been identified as Ronak Choudhary (23), a student of a nursing college and a native of Gujarat.

Local police arrested Royal Choudhary (23) on charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder after he allegedly pushed Ronak Choudhary from the balcony attached to their hotel room (No. 404) around 11.30pm. Ronak died instantly as he sustained severe injuries.

Royal, Ronak and Apoorva Choudhary, residents of Ahmedabad and first-year undergraduate students of private nursing colleges in Bengaluru, had come here to write an exam which ended on Wednesday. While Royal and Ronak are from the same college, Apoorva studies at another one.

Police sources said the trio was among 130 nursing students who had come from Gujarat to write the exam. “These students don’t attend classes and come during exam time only,” they added.

The trio shared a room in Hotel Vishala Residency on Sajjan Rao Road, VV Puram. “They were relaxing after the exam. Another friend of theirs, Ashwini, staying in the same hotel, joined them. The conversation turned into an argument when the trio began talking about their crush on a girl, Nandini (name changed). When things heated up, Ashwini tried to calm them down. Ronak went to the balcony and a few minutes later, Royal followed him and allegedly pushed him,” a police officer said.

Royal told police that Ronak accidentally fell from the balcony and he was not responsible for his death. But eyewitnesses said Royal pushed Ronak during the quarrel.

“We have informed Ronak’s family. The postmortem will be conducted once his parents reach the city. A case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder under IPC Section 304 has been registered and Royal has been arrested,” a police officer said.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A rare bamboo shrimp has been rediscovered on mainland India more than 70 years after it was last reported, confirming for the first time the presence of Atyopsis spinipes in the country. The find was made by researchers from the Centre for Climate Change Studies at Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai, during surveys in Karnataka and Odisha.

The team — shrimp expert Dr S Prakash, PhD scholar K Kunjulakshmi, and Mangaluru-based researcher Maclean Antony Santos — combined field surveys, ecological assessments and DNA analysis to identify the elusive species. Their findings, published in Zootaxa, resolve decades of taxonomic confusion stemming from a 1951 report that misidentified the species as Atyopsis moluccensis without strong evidence.

The shrimp has now been confirmed at two locations: the Mulki–Pavanje estuary near Mangaluru and the Kuakhai River in Bhubaneswar. Historical specimens from the Andaman Islands, previously labelled as A. moluccensis, were also found to be misidentified and actually belong to A. spinipes.

The rediscovery began after an aquarium hobbyist in Odisha spotted a shrimp in 2022, prompting systematic surveys across Udupi, Karwar and Mangaluru. Four female specimens were collected in Mulki and one in Odisha, all genetically matching.

Researchers warn the species may exist in very small, vulnerable populations as freshwater habitats face increasing pressure from pollution, sand mining and infrastructure development. All verified specimens have been deposited with the Zoological Survey of India for future reference.
