Mangalore, Jul 22: Hundreds of college students took to the streets in a mass protest rally held under the aegis of Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) demanding a halt on the numerous cases of rape and sexual assault on college students and minors occurring in the state.

Male and female students alike, from several colleges in Mangalore city came together to raise their collective voices against crimes against women and students and demanding protection for them. The protest rally which started from Ambedkar Circle culminated in front of the deputy commissioner's office.

Several students addressed the protestors, lashing out against the state government and the police department's inefficiency to tackle the rising number of crimes against women.

While Ashwini from University College, Mangalore raised questions on the lack of protection and security measures for the safety of women in the district, Rakshita from Besant College demanded stringent punishment for the culprits of crimes against women. A student of School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya said that the society had to change its perspective towards women in order to prevent crimes such as rapes and sexual assaults on them.
