Mangalore, Apr 2: Condemning the call for scrapping the party 's flagship welfare scheme MGNREGA by BJP leader Subramanian Swamy, Minister of Health and Family Welfare U T Khader said that either the BJP should apologise for it or people should teach them a lesson.
Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, he said that the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) was a law that ensured employment and livelihood security to the labour classes and people in rural areas. It is a scheme that has given powers to the labourers and working classes. It has helped the rural men and women to open bank accounts and apply for loans. People should understand the consequences of scrapping the Act if the BJP gained power, he said, adding that it was the duty of the party to enlighten the people in this regard.
The government can implement a scheme, but ensuring that the benefits reach the people is the responsibility of the MP, he said.
Stating that there was a deficiency of able political leaders in the district, he said that this deficiency should be filled in the elections, and requested the voters to exercise their votes after much consideration and deliberation.
“The district needs a representative who will stand up and raise his voice in the Parliament. He should have the courage to fight for issues related to the district in the Parliament. Congress candidate for Dakshina Kannada B Janardhan Poojary will be an apt person who fits the requirement,” he said, expressing confidence that the Congress would achieve victory in Dakshina Kannada.
To a question regarding a section of residents in his constituency deciding to boycott the Lok Sabha elections over police harassment, the minister acknowledged that the police department had gone wrong by imprisoning several innocent students and residents following communal tension in Kodi in Ullal. this problem will be resolved after the counting takes place, he replied.
