Summer rains bring relief to Bengaluru, Mysuru, Kodagu; more showers expected

Bengaluru/Mysuru, Mar 7: With temperatures soaring in the past few days, people in Bengaluru and surrounding areas received a spell of rain, granting them a well-deserved relief. This phenomenon will continue for a week as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast moderate to heavy showers over south interior Karnataka.

The city of Bengaluru, on Monday, recorded a maximum temperature of 33.1 degree Celsius and the minimum was 23.8 degree Celsius, against the normal maximum of 32 degree Celsius and minimum of 19 degree Celsius.

According to sources, besides Bengaluru, areas around Ramanagar, Mysuru and Kodagu also received light rains on Sunday and weather has been changing from the past one week.

The cloudy weather is being attributed to changes in the Arabian Sea as well as the Bay of Bengal. According to experts, the change in weather is more evident in Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

“There is a formation of a small trough in the Bay of Bengal as well as the Arabian Sea. The confluence of these two troughs has resulted in heavy rains in Tamil Nadu and Kerala. It is the effect of this that is causing the drizzling in south interior Karnataka which can be expected to last up to March 11,” Dr G S Srinivasa Reddy, director, Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre, said.

“The light to moderate rainfall in isolated areas will continue and the heat will come down for a few days to come,” Dr Reddy added.

These rains are also a welcome spell for forests plagued by fires. Bandipur heaved a sigh of relief on Saturday evening with heavy showers in parts of the tiger reserve. Relieving the anxious KFD personnel, heavy rains first lashed Mudumalai Reserve and Masinagudi area and subsequently spread across Chamarajanagar district too.

Air India Express brings back Mangaluru–Muscat direct flights from March 2026

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.
