Udupi, Apr 22: Karkala MLA V Sunil Kumar, who is known for his provocative speeches, has seemingly justified the coldblooded murder of a Muslim youth by ANF personnel at a check-post in Sringeri last week.

Addressing the mediapersons at Udupi Mr Kumar spewed venom saying by announcing CID probe and compensation, the state government sends wrong message that it suspects the credibility of the police.' People will also take it for granted that the government will safeguard the wrong doers, he said.

He said that the government should rethink over its decision to hand over the case to the CID.

Snatching the morality of police'

He added that the government is trying to snatch away the morality of the police. The accused and his family is being protected by the government, thereby supporting the illegal trafficking of the cattle in the area.

Terming the compensation package to the victim's family as absolute blatant deed of the government, the MLA added that the compensation package is ridiculous. “The anti social elements and their illegal activities are supported by the government,” he rued.

The government's decision to support the victim's kin with the compensation is first of its kind in the State, wherein the government is deliberately supporting the accused. Henceforth, the illegal cattle trafficking will increase across the State, he said.

Withdraw the decision'

Demanding that the Chief Minister and Home Minister should immediately withdraw the decision, the BJP MLA alleged that the government of being unbiased.

Referring to the recent case of a student's gang rape case in Deralakatte and the encounter incident of PSI Mallikarjuna Bande, Sunil Kumar alleged the government is ignoring the genuine cases, wherein the CID and CBI inquiry seemed to be must, he added.

Probe explosive seizure'

Stating that the government should also mull over the possibility of initiating CID inquiry into the recent explosives seizure case in Karkala, he said the Karkala police have failed to nab the prime accused in the case. The hefty amount of the explosives, that were seized indicates the threat of terror or Maoist activities.

This is the first time in the State, wherein the police have recovered huge amount of explosives. However, the police department who were citing the reason of Lok Sabha polls for the delay in the inquiry, are clueless even after four days of the completion of polls. He alleged that the storage of explosives of huge amount is taken place with the knowledge of officers in Karkala police, he alleged.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.

SHRIMP.jpg

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A rare bamboo shrimp has been rediscovered on mainland India more than 70 years after it was last reported, confirming for the first time the presence of Atyopsis spinipes in the country. The find was made by researchers from the Centre for Climate Change Studies at Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai, during surveys in Karnataka and Odisha.

The team — shrimp expert Dr S Prakash, PhD scholar K Kunjulakshmi, and Mangaluru-based researcher Maclean Antony Santos — combined field surveys, ecological assessments and DNA analysis to identify the elusive species. Their findings, published in Zootaxa, resolve decades of taxonomic confusion stemming from a 1951 report that misidentified the species as Atyopsis moluccensis without strong evidence.

The shrimp has now been confirmed at two locations: the Mulki–Pavanje estuary near Mangaluru and the Kuakhai River in Bhubaneswar. Historical specimens from the Andaman Islands, previously labelled as A. moluccensis, were also found to be misidentified and actually belong to A. spinipes.

The rediscovery began after an aquarium hobbyist in Odisha spotted a shrimp in 2022, prompting systematic surveys across Udupi, Karwar and Mangaluru. Four female specimens were collected in Mulki and one in Odisha, all genetically matching.

Researchers warn the species may exist in very small, vulnerable populations as freshwater habitats face increasing pressure from pollution, sand mining and infrastructure development. All verified specimens have been deposited with the Zoological Survey of India for future reference.
