Supreme Court allows Reddy to visit Ballari again

New Delhi,Jan 12: The Supreme Court on Wednesday allowed mining baron and former minister G Janardhana Reddy to visit Ballari for five days to perform certain rituals as part of the first festival (Makara Sankranti) after the marriage of his daughter.

A bench of Justices A K Sikri and R K Agrawal granted permission to Reddy to visit his daughter from January 12 to 16, “to perform the necessary rituals and participate in the first festival of his daughter after her marriage.”

“During his visit, he shall not, in any manner, try to influence any of the witnesses or the trial,” the bench said. This is the second time in recent months when the court has allowed Reddy to visit Ballari. The court had done so in November to enable him to perform his daughter's marriage.

The court had then modified the conditions, imposed on January 21, 2015, while granting bail to him. Among the conditions was that he should not visit Ballari in Karnataka, and Anantapur and Cuddapah in Andhra Pradesh.

The court had given bail to Reddy in an illegal mining case involving Obulapuram Mining Company (OMC) as the CBI did not oppose his plea. The court had then directed Reddy to cooperate in the trial and appear before the CBI special court in Hyderabad trying the case. It ordered Reddy to furnish two sureties of Rs 10 lakh each as condition for bail.

Reddy and his brother-in-law B V Srinivas Reddy, managing director of OMC, were arrested by the CBI on September 5, 2011, from Ballari and brought to Hyderabad.

In the OMC case, the company was accused of changing mining lease boundary markings and indulging in illegal mining in the Ballari reserve forest, spread over Ballari and Anantapur districts.

Major facelift for Mangaluru's sporting heart: Mangala Stadium set for 2-month closure to upgrade synthetic track

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Educational institutions in Mangaluru that rely on the popular Mangala Stadium for their annual sports events are bracing for an inconvenience as the city's key sporting venue is set to close its gates for a significant upgrade. The stadium is expected to be unavailable for approximately two months starting from January 15, 2026.

The closure is necessitated by a proposed overhaul of the stadium's facilities, with a special focus on upgrading the synthetic track. Pradeep Dsouza, Assistant Director of the District of Youth Empowerment and Sports (DYES), Dakshina Kannada, confirmed the development.

"Experts have visited the stadium, conducted a thorough inspection, and have given the go-ahead for a complete makeover," Dsouza stated. "Funds have been allocated for the project, and we are currently awaiting the final green signal from state officials to commence the work. We anticipate that the work will likely begin in the second week of January. Consequently, we have stopped renting out the stadium to colleges and other organizations in preparation for the upgrade."

The timing presents a logistical challenge for colleges, as many schools have already concluded their sports meets.

"Colleges will now be organizing their events and will need to find alternative locations to host their sports meets," Dsouza added. He suggested a few potential venues, including the Dakshina Kannada police ground, University College grounds, Panambur grounds, Swaraj Maidan in Moodbidri, and the Mangalore University sports grounds in Konaje.

However, many institutions note that finding a comparable venue will be difficult. While the DK police ground and University College grounds are closer to the city center, they do not possess the extensive facilities and infrastructure offered by Mangala Stadium.

Dr. P Dayananda Pai - P Satisha Govt First Grade College, Carstreet, is one such institution dependent on the stadium. Principal Jayakar Bhandary expressed hope for a swift completion of the work. "We expect the work to be completed at the earliest. If not, we will be forced to look for other venues to host the sports day for our students," Bhandary said, highlighting the pressing need for the city's main sporting facility.

Mangaluru NRI returning from Saudi Arabia arrested over Instagram post

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.
