Udupi, Jan 24: In order to improve security on National Highway 66 the state and union government will jointly install high-resolution surveillance cameras from Talapady in Mangaluru taluk to the Goa border.

These cameras will be linked to the control rooms to come up at vital locations on NH 66. They will also be linked to the district police. This project is still in the initial stages and the procurement of cameras is on in Bengaluru, he said.
Reflectors are being attached to barricades put up at several places on NH 66, which is still under construction in Udupi district, to prevent accidents, he said.
The SP said the police are always in touch with the engineering department of the National Highways Authority of India to reduce accidents on highways. The police department is also devising ways to reduce accidents at black spots and to improve traffic signage, he said.
To a query on overloadied vans and autorickshaws carrying schoolchildren in the district, he said the police were looking into the matter.
The recommendations of the district-level committee formed after the accident at Trasi in June 2016, when eight children lost their lives in a road accident, are being implemented, he said.
