Udupi, Jan 24: In order to improve security on National Highway 66 the state and union government will jointly install high-resolution surveillance cameras from Talapady in Mangaluru taluk to the Goa border.

Surveillance
K.T. Balakrishna, Superintendent of Police, Udupi, told media persons here that the proposal is to install 53 high-resolution surveillance cameras on the highway in Udupi district alone. This would also help in prevention of crime and checking on speeding vehicles.

These cameras will be linked to the control rooms to come up at vital locations on NH 66. They will also be linked to the district police. This project is still in the initial stages and the procurement of cameras is on in Bengaluru, he said.

Reflectors are being attached to barricades put up at several places on NH 66, which is still under construction in Udupi district, to prevent accidents, he said.

The SP said the police are always in touch with the engineering department of the National Highways Authority of India to reduce accidents on highways. The police department is also devising ways to reduce accidents at black spots and to improve traffic signage, he said.

To a query on overloadied vans and autorickshaws carrying schoolchildren in the district, he said the police were looking into the matter.

The recommendations of the district-level committee formed after the accident at Trasi in June 2016, when eight children lost their lives in a road accident, are being implemented, he said.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.

Mangaluru, Dec 20: City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy has issued a high-alert warning to vehicle owners regarding a surge in cyber fraud targeting those looking to pay traffic violation fines. Fraudsters are reportedly exploiting recent government discount schemes on traffic penalties to deceive citizens.

The Scam: How Fraudsters Strike

Criminals are using SMS, WhatsApp, and social media to circulate suspicious links and APK files (Android application packages). They claim these apps allow users to pay e-challans at a discount.

•    Device Hacking: Downloading these unauthorized apps gives hackers full access to the victim's smartphone.

•    Financial Theft: Once the phone is compromised, fraudsters intercept OTPs and personal data to drain bank accounts.

•    Phishing Sites: Fake websites mimicking official portals are also being used to harvest banking credentials.

Already, two residents within Mangaluru city limits have reported significant financial losses after falling victim to these fraudulent apps.
