Mangalore, Dec 25: At least one person was killed and four others were critically injured in a freak accident near Gurpur on the outskirts of the city on Wednesay.
The unexpected tragedy occurred when an oil tanker ran amok after break failure damaging vehicles and shops in the area.
Apart from the casualties and injuries, the oil tanker also razed down a Suvarna tailoring shop and Swagat tea stall and damaged two cars.
The oil tanker from Tamil Nadu was plying towards Mangalore when the incident took place. It is learnt that the driver of the tanker lost control over his high speed vehicle and rammed against a Maruti Eeco and a Swift car injuring its passengers.
The tanker continued run berserk and hit two women who were walking near the bus stop. One of them was died on the spot and the other was critically injured.
The tanker also razed down a tailoring shop and a tea stall causing huge loss.
Fire tender and police rushed to the spot. A case has been registered at Bajpe police station. More details awaited
