Mangaluru Sep 18: Expressing concern over higher rates of drug abuse among students of schools and colleges, Inspector General of Police (Western Range) Amrit Paul, said that owners of petty shops near educational institutions are often main drug suppliers.
He was speaking after inaugurating a workshop on ‘Drug Abuse among Children’, organised by the Department of Criminology and Forensic Science at Roshni Nilaya School of Social Work, Mangaluru in collaboration with Dakshina Kannada Police here on Friday.
“Small tea shops around schools and colleges are the most likely places for the students to get drugs,” he lamented.
He called upon the teachers to play a key role in preventing drug abuse among children. “As a teacher your role is as important as my role. We are all not super heroes but together we can make a difference. Keep your eyes are open, be alert”, said the cop.
Asking the students to stay away from all kinds of drugs, he said that opium is one of the most useful drugs from which most effective pain killer, morphine, is made.
A forensic exhibition and prize distribution for winners of various competitions were also held on the occasion.
Sharanappa SD, Superintendent of Police, DK, Prof. BM Madhav, Walter H D’Mello, DDPI, DK, Dr Sophia Fernades, Principal, Dr Lakshmi Narayana Bhatt, registrar were present among others.
