Team Mangalore to take part in Dubai international kite festival

Mangalore, Jan 15: Team Mangalore, the city-based intrepid group of hobby kite flyers has been officially invited for the Dubai International Kite Festival to be held at Dubai Outlet Mall, on January 17. This unique Kite Festival is being organised for the third time in the UAE. It will showcase some of the best kites flown by flyers of international fame and also include other activities such as kite workshops.

Team Mangalore (India), a regular on the international kite flying scene, will be taking part in this prestigious event. A team of three members that includes Subhash Pai of MRPL, Vasanth Sanil and Pran Hegde will participate in this mega event. Kites of all shapes and sizes will be on display including some massive character and theme based kites. It would be an annual gathering of all the kite lovers in the Middle-East.

The Dubai International Kite Festival will have workshops where people can learn everything from making kites to flying them. Earlier, Team Mangalore had participated in international kite festivals held at Canada, UK, France, Thailand, Korea, and Italy. Recently, it participated in the International Kite Festival held at Hong Kong and its new creations Delta Devil and Garuda won accolades there.

The team is going to showcase their variety of kites which include Kathakkali, the largest kite in India and also various other kites such as Garuda, Delta Devil, Yakshagana, Durga, Charlie, Owl, Pushpaka Vimana, and other kites in its repertoire. Sarvesh Rao, chief convener of Team Mangalore, said the team is all set to to showcase India's cultural heritage on the shores of the Arabian Gulf.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.
