Belagavi, Sep 8: Tension gripped members of the Christian community when they found some miscreants were vandalising a portion of a cemetery on Monday.

The incident came to light on Monday morning when a group of people went to the cemetery to prepare a grave for a deceased person. The matter was brought to the notice of the Christian priests and community leader and the police. Shahapur Circle Inspector of Police D.C. Lakkannavar and Tilakwadi Circle Inspector of Police B.A. Jadhav rushed to the spot and inspected the damage.
Bishop Peter Machado urged the police to hold a proper inquiry. He said that he expected the Belagavi City Corporation officials to provide proper fencing to the cemetery.
He said that the incident had hurt the community which treated its cemetery as the “second holiest place, after the church”. “Yet, he prayed that God forgive the perpetrators of this dastardly act,” he said.
The police have registered a case. Investigation is on.
